new starter - downloading files
I have just started and wanted to download my banking transaction data from a csv file in excel. I have done the extension step and have done the field alignment and clicked finish - absolutely nothing to be seen. What's going wrong?
thanks

Hi Jan,
Try this...
On screen 3 of the Text File Importer extension, use the 'Less Fields' button to make sure that you have ONLY the required number of fields showing.

Thanks - do the columns on the excel spreadsheet have to match the order and headings on the transaction headings? What does "ignore" mean? For example the spreadsheet has STO and DD in a column - do I ignore it or delete it or move it to the end?
Appreciate your advice.
Cheers
Jan

Hi Jan,
If I understand you correctly, No. The column order in Excel does not have to match the order of the columns in the register.
I'm not sure what STO or DD stands for but if those columns are amid the columns that you are importing, then you would use 'Ignore' to omit those columns.
If STO and DD are the last columns in the spreadsheet then use the 'Less Fields' button to omit them.
If you still experience problems importing the Excel data, you can attach a sample of the file and I'll try to set up the Text Importer for you.
Keep in mind that these are public forums. Make sure that there is no sensitive information in the file before posting it.
I should mention also that there is a free third-party CSV Importer for Moneydance which is much more robust than the Text Importer. Should the Text Import prove inadequate, we can try the CSV Importer.

Hi Jan,
I was able to import your Excel file using the Text File Importer.
Take a look at the attached screenshot.
If it looks OK to you let me know or let me know what you would like changed and I'll show you how to set up the importer.
The transaction dated 09/18/2016 represents the header row from Excel and should be deleted post import.

This looks fine to me - could you show me how it is done?

Hi Jan,
Open the Text File Importer and navigate to your CSV file.
Set the Text File Importer as follows:
Screen 1:
Browse - This field should be populated with the path to your CSV file. If not, navigate to your .CSV file.
Encoding - UTF-8
Click 'Next'.
Screen 2:
Account - select the desired account to import the data into.
Fields Delimiter - [ , ] - (comma)
Date Format - DMY
Decimal Point - . - (period)
Click 'Next'.
Screen 3:
Click the 'More Fields' button so that you have the required 8 fields displayed.
Field 1 - Date
Field 2 - Ignore
Field 3 - Description
Filed 4 - Ignore
Field 5 - Ignore
Field 6 - Ignore
Field 7 - Amount
Filed 8 - Memo
If necessary, click the 'Less Fields' button so that you have only the 8 required fields showing.
Click 'Finish'.
Post import, you may need to delete the header row (if any) that may have also been imported.
Let me know how it worked for you . OK?

Kevin
I did everything you said - which was pretty what I did before and still
nothing. I press finish and nothing happens.
I have even cut the spreadsheet into a smaller chunk and that didn't work
either...
Is there anything else we can try? don't feel like hand inputting!
Cheers

Hi Jan,
That's odd.
Can you try creating a new bank account in Moneydance. Give it a slightly different name than the existing one.
Try importing the Excel data into the new bank account.

Got further that time - it said finished writing data at the bottom of the
page but I can't see any figures in the account
Intriguing!
Any more ideas?

Hi Jan,
Look across the top of the register, there are a few filter buttons up there. Make sure that the 'All' button is applied.

Hi Jan,
Look to the left side bar for the account in question, is there a balance amount listed next to the account?

No - nothing showing anywhere!

Hi Jan,
I've been purposely mucking up the settings on the Text Importer to see if I could get the data NOT to import.
The one thing that does seem to mess it up is the 'Encoding' setting on Screen 1.
Can you double-check to make sure it's set to UTF-8?
I have to confess that I'm running out of ideas.
I'll set up the CSV Importer and run the import with that extension. Maybe we can try that if you're interested.

Thanks Kevin for your help. I know without checking that it is on UTF 8.
The only thing I can think of is that when I save the file it says something about that version of the file and certain features - I tick the suggested yes for keeping the current file form.
Sorry I can't give you the exact wording from the screen as I have switched off - time for dinner here. Will have to get back to this tomorrow.
Appreciate your efforts so far
Thanks
Jan

Hi Jan,
Enjoy your dinner.
I was able to import the data with the CSV Importer, so maybe we can try that tomorrow.

Hi Jan,
If you'd like to try the CSV Importer, we can proceed with that option.
Go to the following webpage and download the mdcsvimporter-v20.zip file.
https://github.com/stant/mdcsvimporter2015/releases
After you download the file, extract the mdcsvimporter.mxt file from the .zip file. This is usually done by right-clicking the .zip file (CTRL-click for Macs) and selecting Extract.
Your option may be different depending on your OS and browser but there should be some similar option there to choose from.
When you have the mdcsvimporter.mxt file extracted, you can then open Moneydance.
From the Moneydance menu bar go to Extensions > Manage Extensions.
In the resulting window, click the 'Add from File' button at the bottom.
A file browser will open allowing you to navigate to the mdcsvimporter.mxt file.
When you click on the .mxt file you will likely receive an ominous warning that the file's signature is missing or invalid. You can safely ignore the warning. It only means that the developers of Moneydance have not yet signed the code. Click 'Yes'.
In the resulting window, click 'Install Extension'.
You can then close the 'Manage Extensions' window.
The Extensions menu should now have a new item listed as 'Import File'.
Let me know when you have the CSV Importer installed and we'll work on setting it up for you.

Hi Jan,
Are you having trouble getting it to work or are you having trouble installing it?
-Kevin N.

Hi Kevin
I managed to find and open it but couldnt extract as you suggested - my right click wasn't giving me that option
Committed now until the weekend so will get back to it then
Thanks for your help so far

Hi Jan,
Check to see if the .mxt file is accessible through the Extensions > Manage Extensions > Add From File interface. If so then we should be good to go.
My dance card is empty for the weekend so feel free to post back then.
