Moneydance stopped syncing with my iPad
Please disregard all other post. I just created an account and thought it would be better to resend as logged in. In addition, I copied the info from the console window and pasted it below.
Sorry for the repeat. I originally submitted this as a reply to another person's issue with Moneydance. In my original request for help I forgot to include my OS and the version of Java on my computer. I hope you can help me.
The last time that my Moneydance was able to sync was on Monday,
Sept 19. I tried the following, but no luck:
1. disabled my firewall
2. power cycled my iPad
3. disconnected the Wi-Fi connection on my iPad and then
reconnected it
4. replaced the moneydance.jar file with the preview release
moneydance.jar file [Moneydance 2011r2 (798)]
5. Selected forget device from Network Sync Settings, but now it
can't find the app on my iPad.
OS - Windows 7 Home Premium [Service Pack 1]
Java - Java 6 Update 27
Console window message:
Starting Moneydance 2011r2 (798)
Settings Folder: C:\Users\ARD.moneydance
OS: Windows 7 6.1 x86
Java: 1.6.0_27 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)
netsync extension adding listener for services of type
mdncsync.tcp.local.
netsync: scanning for existing services...
svc type added: home-sharing.tcp.local.
Please help me fix this problem.
Thank you in advance.
Anthony

Anthony,
I think you will find this is the ongoing saga of the sync software just stopping for no apparent reason. There are numerous threads on here that the vendor just does not update with the current situation anymore. I must admit I am disappointed in the lack of support on this very useful functionality ( when it does work ).

Hi,
We are aware that syncing for the Moneydance iphone/ipad app is not working well on some of our customer's network configurations. We apologize to those who have been affected by this. We have made it our top priority to redesign the syncing mechanism to address these issues.
The next release of the app will include a syncing mechanism that is immune to issues with local network and router configurations.
The new syncing mechanism will work in any network configuration and will not require both the desktop and device apps to be running at the same time. In addition, you will be able sync anywhere you have internet access.
We are excited to roll out this fall an app with bulletproof connectivity that maintains the same standards of security and reliability you've found in the desktop version of Moneydance.
We appreciate the patience that the Moneydance community who is affected by syncing issues has given us to figure out the best new implementation. We will notify you once the new release is available.
Sincerely,
Jon Hoover, Moneydance Support

Well without wanting to flog this to death, I too have the same problem so the promised new version I desperately needed. The trouble is there doesn't seem to be any workaround - even for a real techie like me. If I go on holiday and record a whole bunch of transcations on my (recently acquired) iPad, I need to know with 100% certainty that I can get them into MD on my laptop when I get home. If I had to retrieve the data from the iPad's file system an manually import them - whatever - but there seems no way I can see at all, other than hoping that the sync will work.
By the way, on the whole I'm very disappointed with the iPad app anyway. It's functionality is pitifully limited, the user interface really hard to use (especially for splits transactions) and the presentation ugly (fonts too large, no single-line mode option). I've been using MD for years on a netbook computer whose 8.9inch screen is both smaller and lower resolution than the iPad's and it looks far better and is far more usable.
I do hope the new version will get much closer to the look and function of the full moneydance product - as well as introducing "bulletproof connectivity".
Thanks - MD is a great product and I love that it works so well on Linux, so I'm just really surprised how bad the iPad version is.

Well - I posted that comment a few minutes ago and thought I'd have another look around, so I connected my iPad to my Ubuntu Linux laptop, which allows me to browse the file iPad's file system (no iTunes needed - brilliant!).
What I hadn't spotted previously is that there are a lot of hidden file and folders, including Moneydance's. In the Moneydance folder there's a subfolder called Documents, which contains three files: called data-V1, settings, and txnlog-v1. They're all text files - the first appears to contain all the transactions held by the app, the second contains the "crypt key" (useful if didn't note it down when installing the app), and the last contains a list of transactions - presumably those entered since the last sync.
So, I'm now wondering if there's any way that Moneydance proper could be persuaded to import that txnlog-v1 file to update itself with the new transactions?
It's just a thought. Anyway, at least the data isn't completely lost if the thing won't sync - maybe someone could write a plug-in to import that file?

Can we have an update on the new iPad app please? From various postings I've seen on Forums, I understood that it was first supposed to have been available by the end of October, and once that date had passed, I think it was promised by the end of the 2011.
I hope the delay means it's going to be really good - i.e. much better usability, closer in function and use to the full MD application, and definitely with rock solid sync.
You don't need to work for nothing here - I for one would be quite willing to pay a reasonable price for the iPad app if it was any good.
Thanks.

Hi Alan,
Thanks for checking in, it is in beta-testing currently. And the sync will be rock-solid but I am not sure if some of the other design features will be addressed in this release.

Any idea when we can expect this?????
8 Posted by Alan C on 02 Feb, 2012 10:41 PM
While we're waiting can I perhaps become a beta tester?
9 Posted by Jon Hoover on 03 Feb, 2012 04:28 PM
We will be doing a public release of the beta-test soon but we are not sure currently what the date will be.
Thanks for your patience.

Not sure how a public "beta" works with an iOS app, but I'd like to participate. Looking forward to a cloud sync.

It's now over 6 months since, in this thread, we were told that the new version would be out in the fall (I believe they meant 2011) and it's nearly three months since we were told that a public beta would be released soon, yet still neither has happened yet that I'm aware of.
I am really finding this terribly disappointing. I can only conclude that Infinite Kind are either being economical with the truth, or are completely incapable of managing a development project. Either way it doesn't inspire confidence. I really need a usable, reliable version of this app before my summer vacation (end of July). The sync has to be rock solid as promised, but other things like currency support and split transactions have to work and have reasonable usability, unlike the current version.
As I've said before, I will pay for it if it's any good. I'd much rather a good quality paid-for app than a free one that doesn't go the job.
Otherwise, as soon as someone comes up with an alternative app that does the job, I'll be very tempted to change to it and drop MoneyDance on my laptop too. That would be a pity as I like the full MoneyDance very much.

I like your product. However I have to admit that I do not understand what does it take so long to release an update for the iPhone app. It is very disappointing to see that your company unable to solve this issue for a half a year....

Today we submitted the iOS app to Apple to approval, so we'll definitely post on our blog as soon as it's available. We're not sure how long the approval queue is (Apple is a bit opaque about it) but we're hoping soon! We'll also post on this thread when the app is available.

Some bad news: Apple did not approve our latest update to the iPhone/iPad/iPod Moneydance app. This was due to the Dropbox authorization page linking to an external signup form.
The good news: we've re-submitted the app using a newer version of the Dropbox SDK that resolves the issue while also making the Dropbox authorization a bit easier. This submission also fixes a few small bugs that were discovered in the past week.
We're all very sorry for the additional delay in getting the app update. I expect it will be another 5 working days which is Apple's current advertised time to review app updates.

We're delighted to announce that version 1.5 of the Moneydance app, including Dropbox based syncing, is now available. You can find the full announcement on our blog, and Knowledge base articles, including a video tutorial here. You can get to the app directly here
If you have any questions, please post in our new category for questions about the app update. This will help us to more effectively address any questions related to the new version of the Moneydance iPhone app.
We hope you love this new app as much as we do, and thanks as always for using Moneydance.

Many thanks for the new version, which I have now installed and tested, and for keeping us informed recently about its release.
It took me a few minutes to work out how to get the Dropbox sync to work (I should read the docs first!) - I had to turn off wi-fi sync, and in the end uninstalled and re-installed the app, but then it worked. I like the way that updates - on either the iOS app or the full desktop application, are immediately sent via Dropbox, so that if both are running, changes on one are reflected on the other within a few moments. This is so much better than the old wi-fi sync (even on the rare occasions that it worked), which only attempted a sync when starting the application (I think).
By the way, I run MD on Ubuntu Linux 12.04. The Dropbox folder is in the default location - i.e. ~/Dropbox.
I know we weren't promised much in the way of other improvements to the app, and so I shouldn't be disappointed that there don't appear to have been many. However, the transaction entry panels seem slighly better - at least on the iPad they're larger than they were - but otherwise the whole process of entering a transaction, especially one involving splits, is terribly labour intensive compared with the full MD application. I also really dislike the way space is wasted - large fonts, two-line mode without the option, and generally everything spaced out in a very iPad-ey way that just means you can see so much less at a time than might be possible if more space-efficient display options were offered.
Perhaps now that sync seems to be sorted, you can start focusing on functional and usability improvements? I really don't see why the iPad version has to offer such a small subset of the function of the desktop version - it still feels to me that it's been designed for phone users occasionally to capture data on the go, rather than iPad users who may want something more like the full desktop application on a more portable device.
The good news for me is that the app is now just about usable in time for my long summer holiday, where I'll have my iPad but not my computer with me.

Thank you!
The sync seems to work fine now.
One request:
Since usually people use Moneydance on their mobile device immediatelly
after purchase it would be much easier if the IOS app would automatically
set the very date when entering a new data. It is very uncomfortable the
way it is now. (It is the last date for every different expense I think.)
Thank You!

Hi Alan and Domonkos,
Currently we have only one version of the app, designed for both iPhones and iPads. Hopefully, in the future we could create two separate versions that would look a little more suited to their respective platforms.
Domonkos, regarding your suggestion, I think it would be a useful change and I will create a suggestion ticket for it.
Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Hi Jon. Yes - actually once I got used to the very limited functionality of the iPad app I am finding it reasonably good to use, and I'm really impressed at how fast and how reliably it syncs with the desktop version. I've been having both open next to each other just for fun and entering transactions on both and seeing them sync across in both directions within a few seconds - very impressive.
What you say is I think right. The concept of the app is clearly for quick on-the-move data capture for the iPhone user, not serious use as a personal finances application in its own right, which is more likely what the iPad user might want. I was thinking I'd start a wish list of all the things I'd like to see added to the app but then I realised that it is, as you imply, a matter of the concept being different; what I would like is an iPad version of the full MD - with importing of OFX files, transaction reconcilliation, proper currency support, more flexible view options, search functions, etc..
I do hope that you go ahead with the idea of splitting the iPhone and iPad versions and developing the latter more in the direction of a full-function application. As I've said before, I'd be quite willing to pay a reasonable amount for that and I'm sure I can't be alone, so there could be a new revenue opportunity for you there.

Alan,
I can definitely see your point- I use my iPad more and more every day. We're not likely to have a full function iPad app in the near (or even medium) term. There is currently a feature request ticket for a fully functional iPad version of Moneydance, and the ticket is attached to this discussion. By posting in this discussion your interest in the ticket has been registered. This is equivalent to voting for it, and you'll automatically be notified when we have updates.
