UK Fund
I am evaluating moneydance at the moment, and am trying to get Moneydance to grab the latest price for this:
http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/q?s=GB0001036531GBP
I've entered GB0001036531GBP as the ticker, but no joy - when I entered things like GSK.L it worked fine.
I've done the same thing, added security, associated it with an account and so on - but no joy. (Using Stock Quote Synchroniser)
Nothing seems to happen at all - no price info is downloaded for this fund.
Any pointers received with thanks.

Rob,
Thanks for the comments. I'm sure the MD people have lots of competing priorities...and it's taken me a month to get around to posting - I thought I'd give MD a fair evaluation.
What the MD people probably don't appreciate is that there is a key reason to focus on the UK right now and ensure basic features (i.e. stock/funds) work.
Although Quicken dropped UK support 4-5 years ago, the online updates for ForEx & stocks only just stopped working a few months back. So there is likely a lot of UK people looking at switching to something else - and MS Money isn't the answer as they've dropped UK support also. (Good luck using yours while it works...!). If MD recognize this and resolve this UK funds issue, they may well get a large amount of churn business from ex-Quicken people (my Quicken 2002 has been working fine until these updates stopped working).
So (for anyone interested) be sure to go and add your vote to the relevant bugs, which will demonstrate the interest in this (you'll need to register on the Trac site first):

Mike
I had problems with Quicken dropping support, for 98(?) back in 2003/4(?) and they started that silly pay by the month plan, so I moved to Money, it was free on a Dell machine. I used to do a lot of Beta testing for Quicken in those days and got to know a few of the developers by email and voicemail
I thought MS had stopped supporting Money some time ago. I hope that MSN continue supporting price updates if they don't I am no worse off than transferring to MD. The frustration I have with MD is that they will not say it is x weeks/ months/years away assuming nothing else turns up. I do not know any company that cannot produce a timeline for enhancements. I'm afraid I interpret, perhaps wrongly, that this is insignificant but they do not want to say it. Quicken developers were very clear what was in and out of scope and were pretty good at setting timelines for enhancements.
The words "we have started on it" sounds like we have scoped it out and the development cost will not be repaid so we are waiting until there is nothing else to do. Perhaps I am jaundiced by previous experience of these types of holding statement. Seriously good luck, perhaps the real answer is to persuade whatever site MD are using for stock updates to display UK fund prices. Either way too much effort for me until Money breaks.
Good luck
Rob

Hello group,
I'm the developer working on the Yahoo Quotes extension, at least part time. The first thing I did was spend about 10 hours researching the various web services and approaches to getting price information. I learned a lot, and one of the key lessons I learned is that sometimes the problems reside on the server end, not on the client (Moneydance) end.
After studying the problem, I believe the right approach will be to assign both a ticker and a stock exchange for each security. The combination of the two should be able to download just about any security, and also be able to support Google price downloads too. Here are the web pages that I referenced when building the default list of stock exchanges:
http://www.wikinvest.com/wiki/List_of_Stock_Exchanges
http://finance.yahoo.com/exchanges
The plugin will create a settings text file containing the default exchanges, which means if there are any exchanges that need to be added on to the current list of 100+ exchanges, or if any of the symbols change, then users may edit the text file and hopefully fix things without having to recompile a new plugin.
Presently I'm revamping the plugin so it provides you a table of all the securities in your data file and allows you to define 3 things for each: 1) Whether to download or not (yes/no, which allows you to define a ticker but still not download prices), 2) The ticker symbol (replicates what is in MD now) and 3) the stock exchange to use (if any).
The system will only show exchanges that have a Yahoo! symbol on the above web sites. Later, I'll enable the Google exchanges when Google price downloading is coded after this next release. The system will then auto-generate the full symbol. For example, if you type in a symbol of BARC and select London Stock Exchange, the system will automatically generate a full symbol of BARC.L and get the Barclays prices from http://ichart.finance.yahoo.com/. So far in testing I have had good success with this approach. There are other sites like http://uk.old.finance.yahoo.com/ and http://de.old.finance.yahoo.com/ where quotes can be obtained, so I'll try to provide those as options as well. I'm not sure what the '.old.' portion of the URL refers to. I haven't found any "new" URLs that work from the UK site.
Another feature I'm planning on adding is a Test button, so you can test the symbol and exchange combinations interactively to know whether it will work.
I'm expecting to have the next release of the quotes synchronizer ready by the end of June. Hope this helps,
--Kevin

Kevin
Thanks for the update. Why couldn't one of your colleagues have said this 2 weeks ago? I am trying hard not to sound like I am shooting the messenger. I'm just sorry that this update happened too late for me. I now have a different solution in place. Will re-evaluate again when my current solution falls over.
I hope it continues to work out for you as I think this generic solution will get you many more fans when you release it
Kind Regards
Rob

Great news, thanks for the update, Kevin! Appreciate the feedback.
Good luck - I'm sure solving this isn't as simple as we think! Let me know if you need a tester for this!
thanks,
Mike
P.S. I like the idea of a Test button. Also good would be if there was some log which could be checked to see if any of the updates failed.

Many thanks Kevin for the update. I look forward to a working solution at the end of June. Like Mike, I'd be delighted to assist with testing.
Apart from the problem with updating UK share prices I think that Moneydance is excellent - flexible and easy to use. In the past I have tried both Quicken and MS Money - they worked OK until their respective companies lost interest and stopped support.
Please keep us updated on progress.
Cheers
Matthew

To correcr one of the prev comments, uk SHARE prices can be d/loaded. You need something like gsk.l
It's fund prices that's the issue
38 Posted by mennesoft on 31 May, 2010 11:34 PM
Yes, we'll be glad to have testers. Speaking of which, I'd like to gather a list of about 10 different funds or other symbols that are not working currently, so that when I get those 10 symbols working I'll have a good chance that the issue is fixed. Please e-mail the symbols that are causing you troubles to [email blocked].
Thanks in advance,

That's not true - some share prices do not upload. For example some of
the UK investment trusts (which are shares) such as MYI.L (Murray
International Trust) do not upload. Other investment trusts which appear
to be similar in all other respects upload with no problem.
One possible cause is some sort of naming conflict with US share
symbols. For example MYI.L could conflict with MYI (Blackrock Muniyield
Insured Fund) on the NYSE. This suggests that the suffix mechanism is
not working properly.

I sit corrected.

I haven't had a lot of success getting the history for many UK funds, but I have been able to get at least the current prices to update. Price history from Yahoo! seems to be inconsistent and error-prone. Hopefully when we wire up Google price downloads, it will be more reliable and predictable.

The third beta for a revamped stock quotes synchronizer plugin is available here:
http://www.mennesoft.com/yahooqt/
This is build 35 and here are the signatures for yahooqt.mxt:

Fixed in this build are some issues with not actually updating the price correctly, including inverting the price to 1/price.
I was remiss in not thanking Randy Adams, Jerry Duke and Ben Spencer for trying out the first two betas and helping me shake the bugs out. Thanks! The next major feature I intend to add is the Google price download, which may take some time to implement.

Hi,
I downloaded this to disk and saved it. Then I went to Extensions->Add and
tried to add it as a file - I get one dialog which appears OK showing me the
version "53" plus other info. I press FINISH ... and that's it, nothing
else happens.
If I go to Extensions->Get Info For... I still see that I have version "3"
of the stock/forex synchronizer.
So I removed my Stock/Forex Sync extension, and then repeated the above
process - I still don't get the v53 added.
I then try to load my beta 3 version ... (which shows as build 35) - and it
won't add itself either.
I'm confused...and now I have no Stock/Forex sync extension added at all!
thanks,
Mike

@Mike Tozer
I think this happens when you use Java 1.5. I seem to recall I had the same problem.
I upgraded to Java 1.6, and it all works fine.

From the homepage of the estesnsion site:http://www.mennesoft.com/yahooqt/
Note: This beta build has not been tested with Moneydance 2008 or Java 1.5. It has been tested only with Moneydance 2010 and Java 1.6 at this point.
If you have upgraded your java to 1.6 and still are having trouble, please let us know.
