What kind of rip off are you running?
Moneydance just notified me that an upgrade was available on the website. The link then took me to the website to download and install Moneydance 2011. I installed it, now it will only will accept 100 transactions without me paying for a new license. This is highway robbery. You con people into downloading the new version then extort them to pay you more money. The upgrade link should have notified the user right up front that they would be charged an additional $50 to use the program if it is downloaded. But instead you sneak it in the backdoor and try to stick it to the users for another $50.

I thought you just re-entered your old code, but I haven't done it yet. That said it's probably time for me to get another license.

Nope the old code will not work. It looks like way of tricking users into purchasing a new version.

Yeah, I just checked on the website and I have to pay $25 to upgrade. I'm okay with that, since I use this all the time, but I agree that it should be clear before you perform the upgrade. I think there's a link somewhere on the site to download earlier versions - I've had to do that before.

The following Knowledge base article explains the license upgrad policy.

If however you want to go back to using your prior edition of Moneydance, depending on which version of Moneydance you were using, you can download the installation file from the following locations. Just choose the right one for your particular
operating system:
You can download the 2011 version here:
http://moneydance.com/other
You can download the 2010 version here:
http://moneydance.com/download/2010
You can download the 2008 version here:

You can download the 2007 version here:

Under the heading "UPGRADING?" on the download page there is a place to test your license. This will let your enter your existing key and tell you if the upgrade is free or if you would need to purchase an upgrade key. I am sorry that this was not sufficiently clear.

I have to agree the upgrade process is not very clear from a user experience. I haven't been on the MD forums lately, but was just prompted to upgrade when I started MD today. I followed the link and the huge "Download" heading front and center is much more prominent than the smaller/lighter "Upgrading?" heading off on the side bar.
Being cautious I looked carefully since I don't have time for surprises today.
I'm confused though...the upgrade policy linked above states 2011 is free for those who purchased or upgraded to 2010. I'm running 2010 but the "Upgrading?" form on the sites says my upgrade will be $25. Which is it?
Where can I find a list of new features in 2011? I've been waiting for descriptions in my memo splits forever. It was #1 feature request on Trac for a very long time.

If you purchased MD2010 or purchased an upgrade to MD2010 then MD2011 is a free upgrade. If you purchased an earlier version of MD and got a free upgrade to MD2010 then the upgrade to MD2011 is $25.
I am afraid the addition of memos on each split line has not yet made it in.
You can see a detailed breakdown of the changes between versions here:

There is a broad overview in the two blog entries announcing the release of MD2011 and MD2011r2.

Hi dwjm,
As an alternative to Memos, have you looked into using Tags?

Thanks, Ben. The information on these links would be very helpful on the landing page that MoneyDance sends users to for upgrades. For a great user experience, rather than just showings links to downloading, it would be great to be presented with what the improvements are, costs, etc.
Kevin - Thanks for the idea (tags vs descriptions), but what I need is the ability to enter free form text. Say I place an order from Amazon that includes both personal and business items. I'm going to need to split out the business items for tax purposes and I'm going to want notes to refer back to at tax time...or if a client has questions. ...or say I'm depositing several client checks in one deposit - I'd like to include invoice numbers in the split descriptions. There are many uses. I posted this request on trac way back and it quickly became the #1 voted for item. Is trac no longer in use? I can't find it.

Trac is no longer in use. All of the tickets have been moved into an alternate system which integrates directly with the support site. I am sure we will get the memos on splits implemented soon.

This wasn't clear at all, as it's stuck over on the right hand side of the web page in a small box.

Martin,
I'll pass this feedback on to the person who oversees the website.

The flow should be something like...
1) Click upgrade link in MD
2) Presented with what the changes/improvements are
3) Presented with what the costs are
4) Presented with the download link
So maybe the link from MD should be a different page than the download
page for new users.

I agree there are insufficient warnings when upgrading that this is a paid upgrade and it looks like sharp practice to me too. How many times do you have to pay for a product, and why all the upgrades? Most are not adding anything to the value of the product.
15 Posted by Ben Spencer on 01 Nov, 2011 01:56 PM
You only have to pay for the product once. You are fee to use the version you pay for indefinitely.
We typically provide one free major version upgrade e.g. from MD2010 to MD2011. After that we charge an upgrade free if users want to upgrade to the latest version.

Ben -
for those who don't upgrade, will they now keep getting the annoying "Moneydance Updater" splash screen every time they launch the program?
I don't mind that there's a reminder of an upgraded version (because I may indeed upgrade in the future) - but the splash screen with the OK/Cancel message is very annoying.

Hi martin.j.lowe,
Disable the Moneydance updater extension. Un-check 'Check for updates at startup'
