All of a sudden, when reconciling an account, the "Beginning Statement Balance" number is erroneous. As a result, when all charges and credits are accounted for, there is a discrepancy in the ending balance. What is going on?

The Beginning Statement Balance in Moneydance is a calculated value, so something has changed. The knowledge base article:

Should help you sort out the problem.

Yes, I changed something. For 2017 I decided to simplify budgeting by reducing the total number of categories by combining some of the original categories. To do this, I started a completely new budget. Shockingly, after constructing the new budget, I discovered that all the changes I made in the new budget were applied to the old budget. So what’s the point of having the capability of making several budgets if the program does not allow them to be different?

I'm afraid I do not see what impact changing budgets would have on reconciling accounts.

    FYI

According to your FAQ on this problem, it can be caused by deleting a category “that contained cleared transactions.” When I created a new budget for 2017 I combined some categories. For example, my initial budget had categories for Auto Fuel and Auto Maint/Repair. For 2017 I combined them into one category for all automobile related expenses. The changes I made in the new budget also occurred in the original budget resulting in the elimination of categories “ that contained cleared transactions.”

I would start by looking in your accounts to see if items that had previously marked as reconciled are no longer marked, perhaps also looking back in the account to see if a time when it was balanced and move forward from there.

BTW I'm not a member of a the support staff I'm just a fellow Moneydance user
