Moneydance on Ubuntu 11.10

I recently upgraded my computer to Ubuntu 11.10. I did a clean install so there was no existing Java or Moneydance on the system. After a few unsuccessful attempts I was finally able to get Moneydance to start by using OpenJDK on the system with a version of Moneydance that did not include Java. One issue remains, however. Whenever I click on one of the menu items in Moneydance (i.e. the File menu) the dropdown list displays and then immediately goes away. The only way I can use the menu items is with the shortcut keys or Alt-key combinations. I can't figure out why it does this for the life of me. Do you have any ideas?

While I had MoneyDance running properly on Ubuntu 10.04, I've never been successful in doing so, on 11.10 or 12.04. For both 11.10 & 12.04, MoneyDance loads, runs and even saves properly for about 5 minutes, then it freezes. I have to use Xkill to close it. Anyone experiencing the same thing? Any ideas?
:~$ java -version java version "1.6.0_24"
    OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.11.1) (6b24-1.11.1-4ubuntu2)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.0-b12, mixed mode)

    -Many thanks

I am running java 1.6.0_31 -- on ubuntu 12.04, and no problems to my knowledge. Perhaps you need to update your java version? Keep in mind i think moneydance stores its own version of java somewhere in its directories - you can check its version from help->about in moneydance.

If I had one complaint about moneydance on ubuntu it would be this:
-If you click on it more than once, you will have more than one copy running at a time, bad/dangerous in my opinion.

If i had a 2nd complaint about moneydance on ubuntu 12.04 specifically, it's that the icon you click to launch it (presuming you've dragged it to the launcher and locked it via right click), is different than the icon that represents the running program.

    Many thanks for your replies.
Will explore the Java issue, might take a few days.

Yes, looked at the Java issue and decided I don't want to go outside the box, preferring to stick with the JDK version for security reasons. Checking for security updates, seems like a headache to me. I'm still wondering if it's not Unity that is the real problem?

By George, I believe that's done it!
Many thanks James, for encouraging me to go ahead with the change. Your link provided a flawless Java installation. Moneydance appears to be issue free.
    .... another satisfied customer. Cheers,
    Craig
