Hi Dave,
What are the file formats of these backup files, and what steps are you taking to open the data?
Using the latest version of Moneydance, your backup files are stored as .moneydancearchive files. These files can be opened within Moneydance by selecting File --> Restore from Backup.
If you've saved a copy of your data set as a backup, this will be a .moneydance file. You can open this file format by selecting File --> Open --> Open Other.

Hi Jenny,
I don’t know what you mean what file formats, l just go into file and export the backup, l do it to an external hard drive and drop box and iCloud all separately but they are all greyed out when i try to open them and they can’t be opened,
Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave,
When you export a backup, does this create a .moneydancearchive file? If not, can you let me know the entire name of the file that is exported? This will include the file format. If it's easier, you can send me a screenshot of what you're seeing. You can read instructions for taking a screenshot here - http://www.take-a-screenshot.org/

Hi Dave,
It looks like the backup file is slightly incorrect, which is likely why you can't select it. The third file in the screenshot - dave, moneydancearchive - can you re-name this file so there's a '.' rather than a ',' - it should be displayed as dave.moneydancearchive
When you've done this, you should be able to open the file within Moneydance by selecting File --> Restore from Backup from the register.

Hi Dave,
Which version of the program are you running? To check, open Moneydance and select Help --> About Moneydance (or Moneydance --> About Moneydance on a Mac) where the version and build number will be displayed.
I've checked our records using your email address and have located a purchase of Moneydance 2017, so I'll presume you're using the latest version.
When you navigate within Moneydance to File --> Export Backup, this will open a new window where you can choose the file location. At the top of this window, next to the 'Save as' field, you'll see the file name which should show yourfilename.moneydancearchive
It's possible that the name was changed by mistake previously when the file was exported. But if you check this now, and it's still creating a file with a ',' rather than a '.' - let me know and we can troubleshoot this further. You can just make the same change to the file name to open these files if they're exporting in error, but the program should be exporting the files correctly.

Hi Dave,
You can simply download the latest version from here on your wife's system. When prompted for a license key, you can use the same one you've used on your own system,
When you download the latest version, if you're using a Windows system you'll be prompted to upgrade the existing version during the installation process.
Using a Mac system, you should move the new 'Moneydance' version to the same location as the older version, and you'll be prompted to replace it. The newer version will likely have downloaded to your 'Downloads' folder. I'd recommend moving it to your 'Applications' folder. If the older copy is here, you'll be prompted to replace with this new copy.
