As some may have seen, we have released a new preview build of Moneydance 2017. Unfortunately this update has not resolved the long delay experienced when attempting to print using OSX 10.12.4. I’d like to assure you all that we are pushing for a fix as quickly as we can. Please accept my apologies again for the inconvenience this issue has caused. I will ensure you are all notified the moment we have a resolution.

I have a Brother HL-3140CW printer. Latest drivers (ColorLaser 1.2.0) latest firmware (BrMain 383a). Mac OS 10.12.4, Moneydance 2017 build 1597, printer shared on network is checked. My problem matches Yardy's description when AirPrint is used. When the Brother CUPS driver is used the long delay happens and Force Quitting is not necessary.

tarkinetag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/422768062017-04-11T21:15:05Z2017-04-11T21:15:09ZProblems Printing Checks with latest OSX

This is for Ian. How many times are you being forced to apologize for this Printing S.N.A.F.U. (Situation Normal All Fkd Up). You apologized today April 11th, and you apologized on April 1st. Moneydance has known about this problem with OS 10.12.4, since January of this year. I seen the post from someone that was using the Beta Version of OS 10.12.4 dated January, 2017 and he complained about this exact same problem. It seems to me that Moneydance is hoping that OS.10.12.5 will somehow solve the problem. I have seen the way Apple does things. You have 2 chances of that happening: SLIM and NONE!!!

Regretfully Yours,

This continuing problem is clearly serious for a lot of us. And it seems to be taking an incredible amount of time to resolve! This is not an Apple software issue because every other third party app I use that requires a printer works as usual. Why is it taking so long to develop a fix?

Printing worked in the major version before Sierra, now Moneydance has not changed, Java has not changed but OSX has, To me this indicates that something in the Apple printing subsystem has altered, it may not affect other software because the languages the other programs are written in do it differently.

One suspects that Apple is not over communicative on what has changed, do they even write the subsystem themselves and would know? So it means in all likelihood the Moneydance Developers have to try to work through the system to try and ascertain what has been changed and thus how to deal with it, they have not changed how printing in done in Moenydance so it is not a problem they have coded and introduced.

I can blame the Moneydance Developers for a lot of things but not this one :)

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/422768062017-04-13T21:39:27Z2017-04-13T21:39:27ZProblems Printing Checks with latest OSX

There is a successful work around for reports - thanks to one of our fellow users on one of the various threads for the clue. I doubt it will help for checks, but I don’t do checks to test it.

After selecting your MD report in the normal fashion, select “save” from the box next to the “print” box at the top of the report screen. Select the HTML option and use the “browse” function to identify where to put the report…. desktop is useful. This will take you back to the first “save” box - hit “ok”.

Select the new report icon on your desktop and print it. (I had a curious glitch here… double clicking the icon opened a blank sheet of paper for me. If you check in “info” you will see the file is there. So choose “open with” and use text editor to open the icon / file. You may need to highlight the report icon and use the Finder “file / open with” from the very top Finder menu bar to get the text to show.)

Depending on the report you may need to change the printer to landscape in the printer control box. If so I needed to manually resize the width of several columns. This is gruesome.

I prefer Command+Shift / 4 for my draft work, but the work around does work.

Why didn’t Moneydance react to that warning - we will never know. Secondly, one would hope that MoneyDance is on the developers list with Apple so that they get Beta versions of OS X ASAP to test for incompatibilities such as this. If not why not ? There is plenty of blame to spread around. In the meantime we are all waiting to hear from MoneyDance support.

yardytag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/422768062017-04-13T23:44:04Z2017-04-13T23:44:04ZProblems Printing Checks with latest OSX

Developers are always reluctant to change their software to deal with issues in a beta O/S since the beta software is subject to change and indeed the O/S vendor could completely change a subsystem. Few software houses could afford to divert developers to deal with an issue that may or may not be present in the released version, about all the smaller software houses could do is to report the problem and monitor subsequent releases.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/422768062017-04-13T23:50:18Z2017-04-13T23:50:18ZProblems Printing Checks with latest OSX

@dwg:

I was using MD 2015.7 (1358) with Yosemite and the printing problem existed back then, for me anyway. I upgraded to MD 2017 (1597) after migrating to Sierra hoping that the printing problem had been fixed. So, if you say "Moneydance has not changed” I would agree with you. The printing problem remains, that hasn’t changed.

As many other users have said, MD is the only app they have that has these kind of print problems. Since none of us have to ability to look at both the code of MD and macOS Sierra, we just can’t know for sure where the problem resides.

I reread your email several times just to make sure I didn’t miss anything, and I have to say that basing your conclusion that it is not MD who is at fault by using terms such as “indicates,” “may not effect,” “suspects,” and “in all likelihood” severely lowers the probabilities that your conclusion is correct if traditional rules of logic are followed. What is also possible is that MD will use your email as their direction finder and go down the (possibly) wrong pathway and further delay a fix.

I don’t mean (nor do I want) to open up a new conversation where the subject is whose guess is better than somebody else’s guess. What I do want to say is that providing the factual basis, as each of us observes it, for our experience with the printing problem is what is valuable to the MD engineers.
Btw if they could I expect the developers to pay less than nil attention to what I say if they could :)

The interesting thing I see is that there have been a lot of problems printing on Mac over the years, even things like not been able to change preferences, options that you just do on Windows for example and the long term workaround of sharing the printer on the network.

We all know that Moneydance is written in Java, and I know some have quite a vocal response to this, but I see the advantage for a software house in having the Java environment taking care of O/S differences in interaction. I just wonder how much Java is involved with these issues as well.

In this case I do not think IK is totally to blame as a significant number of the posts in the many threads would indicate but I think the blame allocation committee could spread the blame between IK, Apple and possibly Oracle (as the Java developer)

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/422768062017-04-14T00:41:53Z2017-04-14T00:41:53ZProblems Printing Checks with latest OSX

Honestly guys, blame is not the issue here.
I cannot agree that this is an Apple problem.
This same issue has been reported in linux versions that do not use the BSD system Apple uses.
In the many years I have been using MD, it seems to me that a new release often has broken something else. There is a well known user on the forum who still uses his old version, because it works....and does all he needs. I think it is the 2011 release. I've upgraded over the years because I wanted to support the developer. The new features have not been the reason. I did not upgrade to this release because of the printing problem.

jonhtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/422768062017-04-15T10:59:45Z2017-04-15T10:59:45ZProblems Printing Checks with latest OSX

Hi All,

I’m sorry to report that we have still not resolved this issue. We released a new version of the program, build 1612, which we hoped that would resolve the problems but unfortunately this has not been the case.
