Income and expense report unreadable
When I run income and expense reports, the output is truncated and unreadable. I've attached a sample screenshot.
Not so good at tax preparation time!
Any suggestions? Thanks.

I can't make out your screenshot at all.
To make a clear screenshot, hold down the apple key and shift key and then pres the number 3 key.
That will give you a readable screenshot in .png format.
Please re-post your screenshot using the above method?

Further: Your Income and Expense Report ought to look something like Picture 17.
If it looks scrunched up, try resizing it by holding down the mouse in the bottom right hand corner.

Oh. By the way, what is your desktop display set to?
You will want to have it set at 1024x768 or greater.
Anything less will scrunch things up in Moneydance.

Hi moneydance,
Generate the report, then bring your mouse cursor up to the Header row. (In your screenshot where it says Acco...|2...) Position the cursor at the column divider ( | ).
The cursor should change to a double facing arrow. At that point drag the divider to the right so as to increase the column width.

Thanks very much for the fast response, Kevin. That works. This still seems like a nasty little bug, though. Are there plans to fix it?

Hi William,
To be honest, I've not seen this happen before, when first opening a report. It should not happen again as I believe that column widths are now 'remembered' from their last setting.
Glad to hear that it's working now.

For me, then column widths are not remembered. Each time, the reports open completely unreadable until I manually adjust all the column widths. Perhaps in memorized reports they are remembered, but not in regular reports as far as I can tell. To me this seems like a bug, although a new one here, as it did not used to happen.
I’ve already tried rebooting the Mac, which did not solve it.

Please upload a clean .png screenshot of your situation?
As posted earlier, I have given instruction on how to create a .png screenshot.

Hi William,
Does this phenomenon present itself in all reports or only with the I & E report?
Does MD have any problem 'remembering' other settings? For instance, the settings in 'Preferences'. If so, it might indicate a write permissions issue.
I see that in your OP you've provided your MD version and OS.
So as to assist the Moneydance support staff in sorting this out, also provide the version of Java that you are running.
To do so, go to: Menu bar > Help > Console Window: Copy and Past the first four lines of text into your next post so that all of the pertinent information is provided as a whole.

It does seem to happen only with I&E reports. I just tried several others and they worked great.
I’ve had no problems with MD remembering any other settings.
Here’s the version info you requested:

Settings Folder: /Users/bills/.moneydance
OS: Mac OS X 10.7.2 x86_64

Thanks again for the fast support!

Hi William,
First I want to say thanks to James and Kevin for the A+ troubleshooting.
William, that is a very unusual bug, especially since it is not remembering the changes you are making.
Could you open up the console window and send in any errors that may come up while you open the I&E report?
Thanks.
Sincerely,
Jon Hoover, Moneydance Support

I don’t see any errors. I cleared the log and then ran and I&E report. It gave the same truncated display I showed earlier. Here’s the entire log:
loading txn report params (pre-check): {
}
(post-check): {
"colWidths" = "default"
"include_subaccounts" = "Y"
"show_memos" = "Y"
"group_by" = "0"
"all_accounts" = "Y"
"account" = "Cash"
"daterange_option" = "this_quarter"
"landscape" = "Y"
}
Thanks.
Bill

Hi Bill,
If you go to the view menu and turn the sidebar on and then access the report from the sidebar, does the I&E report still come out weird?
Thanks.
Sincerely,

Yes, I’m afraid the same thing happens from the sidebar.
Thanks.

Bill,
Ok, let's try this from another angle. Could you please create a new, blank Moneydance data file, enter a few dummy transactions, then run an I&E report and see if the issue recurs? This will help us to see if the issue is specific to your data file, or to your system. Let me know and we'll go from there.

A new data file with sample transactions produces proper I&E reports, at least with initial testing. So perhaps it is a problem in my data file?
Thanks.

It seems like there might be a problem in your data file. Could you select Help->Console Window and then generate the report. Do you get any error output in the console?

No errors, just this:
loading txn report params (pre-check): {
}
(post-check): {
"colWidths" = "default"
"include_subaccounts" = "Y"
"show_memos" = "Y"
"group_by" = "0"
"all_accounts" = "Y"
"account" = "Cash"
"daterange_option" = "this_quarter"
"landscape" = "Y"
}
Thanks.

Hi MD,
The problem remains, but honestly it’s just a minor inconvenience now (didn't feel that way to tax time!).
Thanks.
