Slow Startup

I have version 2017.3. Have recently been experiencing consistently slow startups, > 1 minute. An addition symptom I noticed is that no error.txt file was being created. File size 0! Saw the article about replacing config.dict. That solved my slow startup problem but I lost my check formats, my extensions and who knows whatever else. Is there anyway to repair a "broken" config.dict file? What else have I lost by resetting it? Why did it get corrupted in the first place? Running Windows 7 with all Microsoft updates and free AVG. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Config.dict contains preferences and customisations that you have made to Moneydance. In many ways it turns the generic Moneydance program into your personal Moneydance program. It stores changes to look and feel elements, memorized reports etc.

While the file is in clear text it clearly does have some sort of defined structure, this is not documented anywhere and the file looks like it is reasonable complex.. I did manage once to work out how to remove some obsolete extensions, but as to working out where there could be some corruption in the file I think the developers may be the only ones with the knowledge that could do that.

I do not know of anyway of identifying where there could be a problem in the file and how to correct it.

There are many ways a file could get corrupted, from obvious things like the disk being full and power failures through to operating system glitches and software errors. Unless something obvious happened I do not think anyone would be able to tell you why.

    Hi Paul,

Something that you could try is to update to the latest stable release of Moneydance (currently MD 2017.4 build (1624)

There have been some reports of the Moneydance Updater extension causing slow start ups. If you have that extension installed, you may want to remove it for now.

Just came here to say I too was having a slow startup problem. It turned out to be caused by the Moneydance Updater extension. Thanks Kevin N!

Ditto for me, the Moneydance Updater extension was causing my slow startup problems.

There is one other possibility. Awhile ago MD had very slow startup since it made a backup copy at that time and the MD file is really LOTS of small files it takes awhile. Updating to the latest version moves that process to the quitting time.

However you may be back complaining that MD is taking a long time to close out.

There are also some speed improvements so I would definitely try the latest preview build.
