    Hi Sanford R,
One of the requirements of the Text File Importer is that the Payment and Deposit columns must be combined into a single column. This can be easily done in a spreadsheet with a simple formula.
If you post a sample copy of the .CSV file I will try to help you with it. Make sure that there is no personal data in the .CSV file as these are public forums.

    Sanford,

Kevin's advice is excellent, and exactly what I would have suggested. If this doesn't help, it would be very helpful to see an example of the file you are trying to import. If you're willing, posting the .csv file (or sending it to us privately at support (at) moneydance (dot) com) will help us to better diagnose the issue.

    Hi Judith,

Unfortunately your CSV file dates are formatted in a way that the Text File Importer extension can't import. The dates need to be formatted using numbers and slashes (for example, M/D/YYYY). There may be a conversion method in the program you're using to view the CSV file, or you may have to adjust the dates manually.

Once the dates are properly formatted you can import this file using the Text File Importer extension. To do this, you need to select what account you want to import the file into and set the "Fields Delimiter" to a comma [,] on the first page, then on the next page when selecting fields, use the following options

    1. Date
    2. Check Number
    3. Ignore (or possibly memo if you want to retain the data that is in the "Type" column in the CSV file)
    4. Description
    5. Amount

and then use the "less fields" button to remove the remaining fields.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance!

    Hi Judith,
I've attached a copy of your .CSV file with the date format converted to MM/DD/YYYY.
You should now be able to use the Text File Importer extension to import it into your data file.
Download the attached .CSV file and remember where you Saved it to.
Make sure that you have a copy or recent backup of your data file before continuing.
    Open Moneydance.
From the Menu bar, click on Extensions > Text File Importer. (not Import File)
The Text File Importer Extension will open. Set it up as follows:
'Browse' to where you Saved the .CSV file.
Encoding should be set to 'UTF-8'.
    Click 'Next.
Select the desired 'Account' from the drop down list.
Fields Delimiter should be set to [ , ] comma.
    Date Format, MDY.
    Decimal Point .
    Click 'Next'
Per Scott's post # 5 set the fields as follows:
    Field 1 Date
    Field 2 Check Number
    Field 3 Ignore
    Field 4 Description
    Field 5 Amount

If there are additional fields displayed, click the 'Less Fields' button until there are only the five that are required.

    Click 'Finish'.

In the future, a spreadsheet can easily convert the Date format of your .CSV file to MM/DD/YYYY.

    Hi Judith,

I've attached a copy of your .CSV file in which I've deleted some commas that were placed in the 'Description' field and causing problems with the import. The comma is the delimiter and can only be used to separate the different fields, any other commas must be removed.

If you look at your original .CSV file, you'll notice that there are 14 transactions involving Bank of America, N.A. and Texas Childrens Hospital Houston, TX. Notice the commas in the two addresses.

A txn dated 10/12/2011 the Description Luglio 1866, the comma had to be removed.
An overdraft txn dated 5/1/2012 the Description 30,2012 the comma had to be removed.

In the future you will need to look over these .CSV files very carefully to locate any errant commas before importing them.

Follow the same instructions in setting up the Text File Import except change the fields as follows:

    Field 1 Date
    Field 2 Check #
    Field 3 Description
    Field 4 Amount

    Hi Judith,

No need to apologize. Members of these forums are here to try and help. We're not always successful, but we try. :)

It would be best if you could post the .CSV file so that I can try to work directly on it.

Keep in mind that the Text File Importer extension requires that the Deposit and Payment columns are combined within the .CSV file. If they are in separate columns then a combined column needs to be created or we could try using the CSV Importer extension on it, which allows for separate Payment and Deposit columns..
If within the .CSV file, Payments and Deposits are in separate columns, let me know and we'll work from there.

Again, it would be best if you could post even just a sampling of the troublesome .CSV file.

    Hi Judith,

You do not need a Balance column within the .CSV file. In fact it should be ignored if there is one.
I was able to import your 2nd_ATTEMPT_Transactions_1_txt file without any alterations to the file, using the settings listed in my post # 5 of this thread.
Exactly what problem are you running into when you attempt to import it?

    Hi Judith

Does your investment company allow manual download of transactions through their web site. Typically manual downloads from a financial institutions website provide the option for more history than the direct connection.

    Hi Judith,
Look to the following website to see if your financial institution is listed as one of the firms that Moneydance supports for direct-connect downloads.
    http://moneydance.com/fi
If it's not listed, look into Ben's suggestion of manual downloads from your financial institution's web site . Look for OFX, OFC, QFX or QIF file formats often referred to as MS Money or Quicken file formats respectively.
Unfortunately, the .CSV file format can not be imported into Investment accounts in Moneydance.
