encryption password: connecting to Moneydance file via dropbox on second mac computer

I was trying to set up my wife's new MacBook Air so I could use Moneydance on it if necessary. I use a Dropbox file sync. So I followed the instructions in the knowledge base, Creating a New account set, then got the code from Dropbox, and then... the final step was my encryption password... Yikes! I have no recollection or record of such a password. I guess since I am syncing between my iPhone and my own MacBook, apparently I have created such an encryption password? But I apparently did not record it, which is strange since I use 1Password and am rather fanatic about recording passwords.

So, help. What do I do? Is there some way for me to retrieve my encryption password? Or, Can I drag my data file out of my local dropbox folder on my laptop and start over, dragging the file back into dropbox and creating a new encryption password and then relink both my iPhone and my wife's laptop using that new password? I'm very fuzzy about all this.

Thanks.

I am not support staff, just a user.

You do not state which version/build of Moneydance you are running. See under HELP – ABOUT MONEYDANCE. For example, I am running 2017.5(1639).

Posting information on the version/build you are running will enable support or other to construct an answer that will help.
Also I don’t recognize the process you followed, you state “So I followed the instructions in the knowledge base, creating a New account set, then got the code from Dropbox, and then... the final step was my encryption password..” can you provide a link to the instructions in the knowledge base you used?

Is the password the one you are asked for when you start Moneydance or is it your Dropbox password or the password you set up within Moneydance related to syncing?

The version I have is 2017.1626. Interesting, Derek, that you have a later version, as I had downloaded the app yesterday from the Moneydance website.

I wish I could tell you what password I need to use! I tried the dropbox password, the password I use to unlock the file on my Mac when I launch MoneyDance, the dropbox code generated by dropbox... none of those worked.

This is the knowledge base article that describes the encryption password. I was simply following these instructions until I got to the part about the encryption password: http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/syncing-and-sharing-data/syncing-with-other-computers

It possible you are seeing build 1626 in the Welcome to Moneydance window? If so this is a programming error the true build is shown under HELP – ABOUT MONEYDANCE.
If under HELP – ABOUT MONEYDANCE it does state 1626 then the latest released build of 2017 is 1639 and that can be found at https://infinitekind.com/download-moneydance-personal-finance-software I suggest you download and install 1639. Note the latest Preview build fixes the build number and other issues and can be found at https://infinitekind.com/preview see text link to change log on that page.
When setting up syncing the best syncing method to use is Dropbox Folder.
When you set up syncing as described in this article http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/syncing-and-sharing-data/syncing-wi... part of the process is to set up a “Encryption Passphrase” (password) on the main computer under FILE – SYNCING. This password is a new password not related to opening your data set or to your Dropbox password. When you sync your second computer by selecting OPEN – NEW “Open Synced File” you are asked as part of the process to enter the “Encryption Passphrase” (password) you just created on the main computer.

    Hope this helps.

Sorry to hear of the issue you have encountered when trying to set up syncing. To view your syncing encryption password in Moneydance on your main computer navigate to File --> Syncing. There should be an option to 'Show Passphrase', this will reveal that encryption password you initially entered when setting up syncing. Can you try using this to see if you have better luck?

Thank you. That's where the passphrase was to be found. I have Moneydance up and running on my wife's laptop now.

I am adding a note in 1Password so I can find it that way in the future!
