Import OFX Credit Card from Bank
My VISA is issued through my bank. It only allows for downloading OFX files. When I download the credit card details and attempt to import it only brings up my bank accounts in Moneydance and not my credit cards. Not sure if this is a bug in MoneyDance or how the file is downloaded. I have no qualms having to edit the OFX file, just need to know what to change. Here is the details from the top of the file with sensitive portions 'X'ed out.

Hi Alex,
If you change the ACCTTYPE from CREDITLINE to CREDITCARD, does it work? This looks like it might be a disagreement between Moneydance and your Credit Card provider about exactly what type of account this is.

I changed CREDITLINE to CREDITCARD with still no success. I went up to
the preview version 641 as well to test. I'm running Sun Java 1.6.0_16.

Hi-
I'd like to jump in. I have a similar (reverse) problem. I have a line of credit at the bank and as a loan account in MD. Importing the OFX file to MD then only offers my credit card accounts. Like the OP I'll edit the OFX but don't know where/what to insert.
Thanks,
-Jim

Hi Alex,
Looking at your OFX more, I see that your bank is sending a BANKMSGSRSV1 message. Usually, credit card statements are sent as CREDITCARDMSGSRSV1. You could try changing that in your OFX file (there should be an opening tag and a closing tag), but this might not work because I'm not sure that the contents of the two types of messages are the same. Alternately, you could create a new account in Moneydance for your VISA and make it a Bank type instead of Credit Card.
Jim, a similar solution would probably work for you. Instead of having your account in Moneydance set up as a Loan account, try setting it up as a Credit Card. It sounds like your bank is also doing weird things in the OFX information they are sending.
Hopefully, that will fix the confusion between your banks and Moneydance. Please let me if things still don't work.

No luck, and I'm not ready yet to move my credit card under bank
accounts. I've started looking at the schemes to see what all is set
for a credit card.

Jessica-
I also find this a less than satisfactory solution. It seems the file tag CREDITLINE should identify it sufficiently as distinct from CREDITCARD -another tag (as I understand it). MD goes to some effort to create specific accounts which is a great feature & I like a lot and don't want to blur.
Do you see this as something that will be remedied in MD? Or a fundamental glitch in how MD interprets bank accounts (they all increase with credits?) as opposed to credit card accounts or loans?
I might rather see it as a loan rather than a cc but could not get this to read in either. Can you suggest possible edits to the ofx file that the current MD would agree to?
Thanks,
-Jim

Hi Alex and Jim,
I talked to our lead developer about your cases, and he told me that there was a bug in Moneydance prior to versions 642 that might be the cause of your problems. Can you please update to the latest version (643) of the preview and see if that helps? You can download the update from our website at http://moneydance.com/preview.

This is all I get when I download credit card OFX files. My Mastercard is held through my banking institution. The only account options I get are for Bank Accounts. How do I amend this file to see credit card options as well?

Hi Peter,
You should download your credit card info into a credit card account, even though it's through your bank. If you connect your account to a credit card account, does it work?

I am doing that but my point (probably not very clear) is that when I
download the credit card ofx file, Moneydance does not give me any credit
card account options to select from - only bank accounts - as I see some
other users have also experienced. I have downloaded the latest version of
Moneydance but problem still exists. The file that I download does not have
the words 'credit card' in the file name.

Hi Peter,
It sounds like your bank is sending your credit card OFX info as a Bank account instead of a Credit Card account type. That's a little different from the Credit Card/Credit Line confusion. If your bank is sending your account information as a bank account, you'll need to create a Bank account in Moneydance to import the data. Alternatively, you could try calling your bank to see if they can change how their server sends the data.

Updating to 643 solved the problem for importing my banks credit card
information. Now the wait for import to work in 2010. Thanks for the
help.

Still waiting to hear from my bank. Simple question - why does Moneydance
not just give me all the options to allocate a file for any account type.
Then I would not be dependent on the bank getting it right?

I am having the same problem as described above, I am unable to import any credit card information from .ofx files. One of my credit cards is with my bank and the bank account information imports without problems. However the dialog box that comes up when it comes time to choose an account for the credit card information gives me no choice at all, there is nothing in the drop-down. This is also happening with a separate account unrelated to any bank accounts. I just upgraded to 643 as advised above but the problem is not fixed.
Any other solutions available?
Thank you,
Maggie

Maggie,
I'm so sorry that we did not answer your inquiry earlier. Somehow it fell through the cracks and I apologize.
Are you still having trouble with downloading accounts? If so, what version of Mneydance are you using?
Please let me know if I can help you with anything else and sorry again for the late response,

Hi, I was interested to read this string as I have the same problem. To answer Jon's questions for Maggie, OFX file downloads fine from the bank website and locates itself in the same folder as the other files. It's only when you ask the program to import it to an account, MD doesn't identify anything other than bank accounts. The drop down list does not list credit card accounts or loan accounts. I am using MD 2010r2 (735), I hope this is enough detail, I have only started using this program after years of Qkn and like the change

Paul, Please give our latest preview (and soon to be stable release) build a try, my hope is that that will solve your issue but let me know if it doesn't and we can work out other solutions. Here's the link for the download: http://moneydance.com/trac/wiki/Moneydance2010Beta.

Hi Jon,
Sorry to report that I downloaded the latest version (749) from the link last night about an hour after I wrote it, and it still suffers the same problem. Only the Bank Accounts I have show up on the drop down menu from the import screen, so no real change to the problem, but does look better. Thanks
Paul

Jon, Just realized something when I went to pay some bills on the net. One of the billers automatically denied payment because they "don't accept payment from a loan account". Could it be instead of identifying the credit card account as a credit card, they identify it as a loan. I notice the loan account I have doesn't appear on the drop down list either. Hope this helps..

I have the same issue. Downloaded the latest build and still does not
recognize loan or credit card accounts.

Paul,
It sounds like your bank is sending your credit card information as bank account information. If you set up your credit card account as a bank-type account in Moneydance, you should be able to import your OFX files into it.
Pete,
If your bank is sending loan or credit card information as bank (checking or savings) information, than. the only way to get Moneydance to see it is to set up your Moneydance accounts as bank accounts. If your bank is sending the information as credit card information and you can't connect it to a credit card account in Moneydance, than that's a separate problem that we'd need to troubleshoot.

This problem emerged when I upgraded to Moneydance 2010. The account is five years old and has 847 transactions, so I will not be deleting and recreating it.
23 Posted by randolph on 09 Jul, 2010 01:02 AM
There's rather a muddle in terminology, too. A credit card account is a bank account; it's just not a deposit account. I think the code is being too picky, here.
24 Posted by Angie Rauscher on 09 Jul, 2010 01:35 PM
Randolph,
You're right, the code is a bit picky here. We've made changes to this, ad the next beta build of Moneydance (752) will make it possible to import these OFX files into your preferred account type, regardless of how the bank "labels" this account in the file.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance,

I am not sure if my challenge falls into this discussion. I am trying MD out for suitability. All is, so far, very impressive but although I have successfully downloaded my 'current account' from NatWest (UK) the NatWest credit card account does not load. The OFX file is sitting on my desktop but when I get to MD 'Select Account' screen it only allows me to select the current account. What am I doing wrong? Or what id MD not doing?
