Updating Prices - Update?
In early November, we were told your lead developer was working on the problem of stock/fund prices no longer updating on a daily basis and that a fix would be in place within a day or two. Obviously, more time than that has passed with no fix in place. To my knowledge and frustration, you have not provided any status update to your customers; at least I haven't seen any. Would you please do so? Can you give us a realistic timetable or tell us whether a fix will be possible or not. It sounds as if a number of users have abandoned Moneydance to go to Quicken. Your lack of any update, coupled with the lengthy period of time the problem has been in place, certainly encourages seeking out alternatives.

Hi,
I agree that it's high time that we provided an update on this issue. Please accept my apologies for the lack of communication from us. We have many open discussion regarding the Quotes and Exchange Rates extension issue and we're just working through the backlog. Much of the information has likely been made available by our helpful forum members but I thought it best you hear from us directly.
Our lead developer has been working on adding additional services to the Quotes and Exchange Rates extension. We have had positive results with the free-to-use service Alpha Vantage. We have just pushed a new version of the Quotes and Exchange rates extension that will allow connections to Alpha Vantage.
If you would like to download prices and rates from Alpha Vantage via this new extension you will need to be running Moneydance 2017. At this time, until we release a new stable version, you will need to use the preview version of the program. For those who purchased Moneydance 2015 or more recent this will be a free upgrade for you.
If you have purchased Moneydance 2014 or older and you'd like to upgrade to the latest version you can enter your current license key into the 'Upgrading?' box on this page to redeem a 50% discount against the upgrade cost.
If you're unsure what version you have purchased, you can test your key in the 'Upgrading?' box linked above or retrieve your license key by entering your email address in 'LostKey?' field to the immediate left on the same page. If you're are still unsure, please raise a private discussion and we'll have a look for your purchase history.
The latest preview version is Moneydance 2017.6 (1652) and can be downloaded from here.
The new Quotes and Exchange Rates is available in Moneydance via Extensions -->Manage Extensions. You can also download the newer version from here -
https://infinitekind.com/tmp/yahooqt.mxt
Drag the downloaded .mxt file onto the Moneydance program window. Select 'Install Extension' and the new extension will then be available within the Extensions menu.
The new extension pulls data from https://Alphavantage.co which is a free service that specifically provides an API for people and apps to retrieve prices for exchange rates and security prices.
When using the updated extension for the first time, you’ll be prompted to visit the Alpha Vantage site to claim an API key. You can then enter the key into Moneydance to begin downloading your prices and rates.
We're still working on finding and adding additional sources, but for now the Alpha Vantage support should handle the vast majority of our customer's usage.
Please accept my apologies again for the long wait between updates. If you encounter any issues with the new extension please raise a new discussion thread where we can troubleshoot further.
I am assigning this discussion as private as we have many public support threads for the same issue. This thread will remain open but if you would like to post publicly on this issue, you can find the below thread that we are keeping open for this purpose -

Ian, my Moneydance program is installed on my MacBook Pro. I have Version 2017.5 (1639). It sounds as if I need to have Moneydance Version 2017.6 (1652). Can I download it from your email or do I have to get it from the Apple Store? Once I download this version, will the new Quotes and Exchange Rates be available on the downloaded version 2017.6 or must I download it from the .mxt link you provided and drag it to the Moneydance program window? If I’m prompted to go to the Alpha Vantage site to claim an API key, I’m confused as to where I enter that key in the Moneydance program - can you clarify?

Someone from the IK Support Staff, please respond to my foregoing email sent to Ian yesterday after he sent the update email yesterday morning. I also sent an email earlier today which I am copying here for your consideration and response: "I did purchase Moneydance from the Apple Store and am currently running Version 2017.5 (1639). This is running on a MacBook Pro with OS X El Capitan. Are you saying the fix you have described, including the download from IK, will not work for me and I will have to wait until the update is provided to and approved by Apple? If so, do you know how long that will be? Thanks." PLEASE RESPOND TO MY LAST TWO MESSAGES.

would you consider Barchart for updating stock prices?

FWIW Barchart seems to be at:
https://www.barchart.com/ondemand/free-market-data-api
A problem I see is that it appears to be North American & U.K. only.
Many of the "services" that around seem to have a limited geographical coverage.

dpirin,
The version of Moneydance that is available from Apple and the version that is available directly from TIK are not interchangeable, there are slightly different capabilities but most importantly there is a different licensing scheme and the licenses simple do not work between editions.
Hence if you use the Apple store version and then download the direct version it cannot use the Apple store license.
TIK never releases preview builds via the Apple Store. A stable release has just come out on the direct site a couple of days ago, but I cannot say if it has been sent to Apple or how long it takes them to process it.

I am not sure who "you" is in that question. I am a user such as yourself. Did you look at the actual Barchart website? I am not sure about the international exchange coverage. Is it better than AlphaVantage? Does it cover muni bonds? What is the server speed?
More to the question, is should BarChart themselves be building an extension? You should suggest that to the BarChart folks. Since BarChart seems to charge for accessing its database then the motivation would be for BarChart to make the connector software. I don't see a reason for IK to support BarChart's business model?
A suggestion without research is just that.
