I have tried to run an archive on my Moneydance file to mdarchive.md, but it fails saying access is denied.
The full error message is -

Error saving file:
java.io.FileNotFoundException:
_mdarchive.md (Access is denied)

I cannot remember if I have done an archive before!
Thanks.

    Hi Diana,

Archiving was useful when computer hard drives were small and CPU's were slow. Archiving now-a-days is rarely necessary and can be problematic.

Investment account txns will not be archived, neither will any transfers to or from Investment accounts.

These omissions while necessary to maintain investment account performance can wreak havok with existing balances.

A much simpler alternative to Archiving is to apply the 'This Year' filter in the register.

This allows for much easier research of prior years txns.

Having said that, as to the error message, it sounds like you are attempting to create mdarchive.md in an area of your computer that you do not have write permissions to. Try creating mdarchive.md in your 'Documents' folder, then move it to some other location.

As a precaution, either make a copy of your data file or make sure that you have a recent backup before Archiving in case the results are less than desireable.

    HTH -Kevin N.

Thanks, I created the archive file in a different location & it worked fine! I just wanted to tidy the files a bit.
