Lost data
I have read some of the recent lost data discussions and my experience seems different. I had done a couple hours work entering new transactions and then the menus stopped working, for no apparent reason: I would click on a menu, it would appear momentarily and then disappear before I could choose an item. Then the account I was working on (I keep two) simply went blank: no transactions anywhere, including all last year's. Gone. I couldn't use the program so I closed it, which turned out to only be possible by closing down my machine (Apple Mac OS X 10.5.8). I reopened. The other account is all there, but the account I was working on is still gone. I can recover a back-up file by changing the extension so I get back to where I was this morning. But a couple of hours work is wasted. And now I'm scared about what kind of bug I have in the software, and whether all my next efforts will be wasted as well. What happened?

Dave,
Well, that's odd. To get started, Could you please let me know what version of Java and version of Moneydance you are running? This information is available in the Help->Console Window menu item, and will help us to better diagnose the issue. It would also be good to make sure you have the "ALL" filter button clicked at the top of the register.
Let me know and we'll go from there,

Hi, There's a great deal of info on the console window, but these seem
to be the relevant two lines.
Starting Moneydance 2010r3 (751)
Java: 1.6.0_26 (Apple Inc.)
I have never used those filter buttons, so I just now tried them and
found that if I clicked "this month" I got the same blank screen I had
suddenly seen today (because I haven't entered anything for June yet),
even though I hadn't clicked one of those filters. So I brought my
discarded back-up file up again and clicked ALL and there were the
transactions I had entered today! It doesn't explain why the menus
suddenly wouldn't work, or why the screen suddenly went blank, but at
least I actually have the data and my two hours were not wasted.

Hi David,
I am not sure exactly what may have caused the crash. Hopefully it was a one off event as we don't really hear about that sort of thing too often. If it happens again go to Finder and select Applications -> Utilities and then Console.
Once in Console do the following:
File->Open (command-O) then command-shift-G and type "~/.moneydance" and selecting errlog.txt Then go ahead and send in the contents of the error log, this data will help us diagnose your issue.
Thanks and sorry for the inconvenience.
