moneydance data files
I have just purchased a license for moneydance and sort of transferred my files over from a very old version of Quicken (v2). I have installed a second copy of the moneydance programme onto my laptop and now want to move a copy of the account fileson to my laptop for when I travel abroad. I have tried exporting all files as a qif file and also as a moneydance xml and 2008 file. The qif file gives me weird and wonderful transactions in the various accounts and the moneydance files disappear into the ether somewhere.
I'm sure it must be be not quite understanding the workings but can anyone help.

I should say that I am running moneydance 2011 r2 803. My home computer is on XP and my laptop running windows 7 home premium 64 bit. Thanks in advance

Hi derick,
The easiest way to accomplish what you are looking to do is to copy the Moneydance data file from one machine to the other.
To do so, do a 'Search' of the machine where Moneydance resides for "*.md" (minus the quotes) The Moneydance data file will have a .md extension, the star is a wildcard and will help to find any file with a .md extension.
Once you've located your data file, you can burn it to a CD / DVD, copy it to a flash drive or email it to yourself and then download it to your laptop.
If you would like to keep the 2 machines synchronized, there are a growing number of MD users who have had success using Dropbox.

Hi Kevin.
I have a couple of qif.md files which I initially exported and tried to import into the second copy of Moneydance that's when it all seemed to go funny on me. I have evn tried uninstalling MD on the laptop but there must be a file or two lft behind because when I reinstall it ask if I want the autosave version.

Hi Derek,
Open Moneydance on the XP machine, you should be able to see the path to the currently running file in the Moneydance window title bar (at the very top) Take note of the path and filename.
Close Moneydance and navigate to that location to copy the data file.

Hi Derick
I would copy it to your 'My Documents' folder or create a 'Moneydance' folder in your 'My Documents' folder and copy it there.
Once the data file is copied to your laptop you should be able to just double-click it to open it.

You are a star. I copied the file to my flash drive and double clicked from there. It opened and loaded all the files and transactions.
Many thanks Kevin. Just got to learn how to use the programme now.
