Account balances suddenly showing incorrect amounts, split payment dropped
I just finished balancing some of my investment accounts today
and noticed that my checking account showed a balance of +$37,000
over what it should be! I have no idea how this happened. I've been
using MD for over a year now, and this has never happened. I
entered a balance adjustment to fix this.
Well, I ALSO noted that a savings account of mine suddenly has a
balance that is +$25,000 higher than it should be. So I took the
time to analyze the current (wrong) register and compare it to an
accurate backup from June 14 (12 days ago).
I found the discrepancy in a transaction dated 5/03/2002. I had a
split transaction that recorded a payment split to two categories.
Today, for some reason, only a single payment appears in the
register, and the other one is dropped. All the balances to the
present day were changed to reflect the dropped payment, and I
showed a balance of over $25,000 more (the amount of the dropped
payment). Why did this happen? This account has not been touched
since April 2012. I have screen shots of the registers and
transactions to show the problem.
Note that I am using the latest version 2011r2+ (808).
I will be happy to work with you on this. I will probably find a
similar issue with my checking account.

Hi pfkalina,
Have you adjusted your initial balance in the account at all? Is the extra $37,000 present in the transactions, or just the total? What operating system are you using? And what version of Moneydance and Java are you using (can be found by going to Help -> About Moneydance)?

OK, I think I found the problem. Both involved the buying of cars, which I assigned to my Personal Assets account. I put cars, major appliance purchases, etc into that account. Well, I remember last week going through that account and deleting the two cars (which I no longer own), to bring the account balance within reason. Maybe I should have just entered a negative transaction to zero it out. Nonetheless, when I deleted the car transactions, it wiped out the original payment transactions and credited my Savings and Checking accounts those amounts.
I want to apologize for jumping the gun and maybe causing some other users concerns about data integrity in MD. And thanks for trying to help, Scott.
