security name change

My institution has decided to Change the name of he Yackmann Fund. They are doing this by SelXfr with the old name and a BuyXrf with the new name. If I just accept everything and *pick none of the above" see below. This causes the cost basis to be zero for the new name.

MoneyDance appears to be letting me try and match the old fund with the new fund since I get a dialog box that says "Please choose the security that matches the information below ..." And there is a drop down box listing all the securities except for the Yackman Fund which should be a the bottom of the list. At the bottom of the list is "None of the above". It looks like "None of the above" may have overwritten the Yackmann Fund.

Any ideas

    Hi David,
A possible easier way to accomplish this would be to just rename the old fund to the name of the new fund.
Menu bar > Tools > Securities > Select the name of the old fund > Edit
In the resulting form, click the 'Edit' button up at the top.
In the next form you can change the name of the fund and change the ticker symbol if necessary.
You would probably then ignore the SellXfr / BuyXfr txns. You may want to make a notation in the account's properties of the name change and of the date that it occurred.

Well I tried the above suggestion and changed the name to exactly what the new ID will be before importing the data (Same name, Security ID and Value Suffix etc). Doing that generates two Yackman Funds entries with everything the same and I still can't delete the new one since MoneyDance says it is in use.

I also tried adding a dummy security so that the Yackman fund is not at the bottom of the list of securities. I still can't select the Yackman Fund when MoneyDance asks me to "Please choose the security that matches the information below ..." because the Yackman fund still doesn't show up in the list??!?

    Any other ideas?

    Hi David,

Sorry to hear that it didn't work. If you go back to Plan A, you should be able to set the SellXfr and BuyXfr txns to reflect the current cost basis. You will lose the performance history though.

I'd be curious to hear from other users or MD support as to how best to handle this.

    Sorry I couldn't help.

I have the same problem with the same fund.

After you remove all the transactions on the new fund. Then go to the account that has the fund in it and remove that new fund from the account.

Then rename the old fund to the new fund name
ie Yacktman Select Fund to Yacktman Focused Fund

I deleted the buy/sel transactions and made sure that the new name was not used. I deleted the new fund name and renamed the old fund and the old id number and symbol to the new fund name/id/symbol.

But every time I download from my financial institution it recreates the stock. It does not update the prices since it is sure that I have zero shares. I use the Toos->Securites to delete it but it pops right back.

The only difference is the capitalization of the fund names. Possibly MD does a case sensitive name compare? I will test this and report back.

Very annoying issue to have this security with zero holdings keep showing up.

Well, changing it to all capitals doesn't get it to recognize as a security I already have. It should match the securities by symbol in this case YAFFX. The security ID is listed as ^561709445 (which is what is shown below except for the spurious ^ symbol which both the existing and new security have as identical.

Since it is merely a name change of a security I would like to keep history, performance, yadda, yadda, yadda.

The console shows that the data downloaded is below. The only weirdness is that even though it gives todays date as the price date, the price is yesterdays value. But it should match it to the existing security! There is nothing in the console log that shows that it tried to match to existing.

    Hi,
I'd like to look into this further. Would any of you be able to send me a data file from before and after this name change so I could mess around with it? My email is Jon at Moneydance dot com and I would be sure to delete it once I am done with it.

    Jon,

That is a lot to ask for. Is it ok if I remove 98% of the file? It will take awhile to strip down the file.

I can just strip the file to have that one security. I can delete the extra security and then update the file which will bring it back. Would those two files do it for you?

    Jon,
You should have a severely stripped down version. Let us know if you find the problem! Of course be aware that I will ask for a nightly build as soon as you fix that!! :-) The nightly builds are about 3 months out of date.

I have sent some data to Jon and he has tried various fixes so activity has happened. There is not a resolution at the moment. I still have two securities that reappear every time I download from two different financial institutions.

    Hi,
There is a bug ticket for this that I have attached to this thread. Unfortunately, there is at present no fix we can offer. How Moneydance handles CUSIPs (which is the id that securities have associated with them) needs to be changed such that you can link or merge securities with different CUSIPS.
    Sorry for the inconvenience.

    STH,
The first time you downloaded the data with the new security in it, were you presented with the "which security does this CUSIP refer to" window? And if so could you associate it with an older security?

Yes, I was presented with a message asking if this was one of a pop down list of securities. If I delete the security (which is not in any accounts) I get the message with a new download from my financial institution.

No the popdown menu only allows association with securities that have no SYMBOL. I have several retirement securities and some others that have no symbol and they are on that pop down list (some are from discontinued securities, etc.).

I also had this problem in listing some Call Options I recently purchased. I entered them and then a day later or so, they came up on this list as well and kept reappearing under a slightly different name though they should have had the same id and everything. This has stopped since I sold the Calls.

The both of these additional securities do not update since they have zero holdings in any of my accounts.

We have put in a feature request ticket for a merge security utility which should address this issue.

My understanding is that the name change creates a new security id and for all intents and purposes this is seen as a new security. This doesn't help when trying to maintain performance ratios. The utility request is for some method of batch changing security satisfactions to the new security with no change in pricing.

    Hi,
I just spoke to the developers about this. They are planning on putting a batch change option in for securities. This will probably not be in Moneydance 2012, which is coming out soon. But in Moneydance 2013 which is coming out later this year hopefully we should have this feature implemented. The batch change option should allow you to transfer your old securities transactions into the new one that gets created when you download it for the first time.
    Thanks for your patience.

I have a similar problem. I transferred in some securities that I had not created before to Moneydance created a random number for the security name. I have gone into the Tools>Securities to try and add in the correct security information and that goes o.k. However, I have gone back the original transaction to assigned the correct security name and security system and it does not work. The transaction refuses to change to the correct security information. The names of the correct securities do not appear in the "Security" pull down menu. I cannot delete the incorrect security names because they "are in use". I can edit the incorrect security names but the edits are not saved. Basically, the edit securities does not work at all if the security has at least one transaction. This is a major bug that means that if I transfer in a new security and some of the information is incorrect I can never change it. Major program FAiL!

    zwood,
This should work and it has for many of us. You may be editing a security that is not in the account you are looking at.

Try the following, go to the account with the security in it and open the "Security Detail" tab. You should find your security in the pull down list. This may be the one with the random number. Open the "history" from the button on this page.

At the top of the history window is a button "Edit" next to the security name. Use this to edit the security name (not the ID). That should change the security in the account to the correct name.

Actually, you don't need to be in the account with the security name in it.

From the Menu > Tools > Securities you will access all securities in the data file. Just select the security from the list and click the "Edit..." button.

Unless there is a fix in MD 2015, the answer is no. Now I haven't seen a blog post on the update to 2015 and the features/fixes included.

The issue is that from time to time the dynamics of certain securities and funds change and they have a new cusip. As described by the OP many institutions deal with this as a sell xfer/buyxfer. The problem with this is that you lose a lot of the performance history of this particular investment.

The developers have been resistant to a simple security edit function to edit a cusip as it could lead to a number of unintended issues. Especially as change of cusip is infrequent and unique.

There is an FAQ for fixing a mismatched security download that could be used as a fix for this. Here is a link to that faq: https://infinitekind.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/202421269-Fixing-mismatched-securities-from-downloads-in-investment-accounts

A change in cusip implies a change of security, but I do not think in these sorts of instances that doing a sell and a buy is a correct approach to handling the transfer, as has been said you lose your performance history.

I believe what is required in Moneydance s a stock for stock acquisition transaction type. In this case it would probably be on a 1 for 1 basis, but such a transaction type could be also used for company mergers & acquisition where you receive stock in the new company on the basis of a certain ratio (so you have to allow for ratios of other than1:1) The software would have to recalculate the cost price based on this ratio thus preserving your history (it should also allow for the choice of moving over share price history to the new ticker symbol).

This would remove the need for a security edit function of the type described.

Such a transaction type can handle a rename of stock, it can also handle a change a share type e.g. if a company converts preference shares into ordinary shares as sometimes happens.

In MD 2015, there is No Edit button in the Securities list (at least in trial mode).

Have just begun investigating how feasible it will be to switch Investment accounts from Quicken. The license terms for a household are much more attractive than Intuit's terms for Quicken. However, Quicken is able to deal with name or ticker (haven't tried CUSIP) changes for a security, and asks if price history should be copied if the ticker is changed.

The lack of an Edit button in the Securities list was observed under Win 7. Have also been trying MD 2015 out under Win 8.1, but not likely an Edit button will be available there either.
