Should Mac's Exposé work in MD?
I have Mac OS X 10.6.8. One of Mac's tricks which I use a lot is Exposé, which displays all open windows in the current application by shrinking them and scattering them around the screen. (If there is a Wndows equivalent I don't know what it's called.)
In MD this doesn't appear to work as it should. I can see that it's trying; it always shrinks and displays at least one of the open windows, sometimes two or three, but more often than not there are some missing; I can't detect any particular pattern.
Before I spend any time trying to master it, can you please let me know whether it should work? If it's supposed to work, but doesn't, do you think it's an MD problem, or a Mac problem?

Hi a.beattie,
Is the split window open when you are trying this? Have you tried it without the split window open?

I'm not sure whether you are referring to the split editor window or the split register view; but I wasn't using either of them. (I've tried it again, just to be sure.)

A. Beattie,
Could you please let me know what Moneydance windows ARE open when you're trying to use Expose? For example- home page, 2 checking accounts, 2 reports, 1 graph, etc. This should help us to better diagnose the issue.

Hi a.beattie,
To add to Angie's response, I was referring to the split editor window.

You asked me what windows were 'open' while I was trying to use Exposé. I think it's slightly difficult to answer this, because if Exposé doesn't show a window you don't really know whether it's open or not.
So far as reports are concerned, Exposé seems to work well; I know that I can have several reports open and Exposé will show them all.
Other than that, it's a bit unpredictable. Here is a sequence of actions and their results.
(1) From menu: View → Home page:
Exposé shows 1 item only – the home page.
(2) Select a register from the drop-down list:
Exposé shows 1 item only – the register.
(3) From menu: Tools → Graphs & reports:
Exposé shows 1 item only – the 'graphs & reports' screen.
(4) Select a report:
Exposé shows 1 item only – the report.
(5) Click on 'done' to close the report:
Exposé shows 1 item only – the 'graphs & reports' screen again.
(6) Click on the red button to close that screen:
Exposé shows 1 item only – the selected register again.
This last step seems to show that the register must have remained open since step 2 – but then why didn't it show in Exposé?
I'm also puzzled by the way the home page behaves. If I close the register after step 6, hoping to return to the home page, I find that MD closes down completely – which suggests that the home page must have been closed, for no apparent reason.
And here's a strange variation. (My home page contains memorized reports.) This is what happens if, after steps 1 and 2, I select the report from the home page instead of using the 'graphs and reports' screen:
(3) Select a report from the home page:
Exposé shows 2 items – the home page and the selected report.
(4) Click on 'done' (or on the red button) to close the report:
Exposé shows 1 item only – the home page.
In this case, the home page has remained open; on the other hand, the previously selected register has disappeared, although I didn't do anything to close it.
As a bonus from all this, I've accidentally discovered a shortcut which I don't think is mentioned in the UG. If you have opened an account or category register from the drop-down list in My Finances, a single click on the space bar will take you back to that list.

Hi Allan,
Can you try opening the split editor window, as though you were going to enter or edit a split, and doing Expose while it's open and report what happens?

Scott: here's what I tried –
I start with four windows open: 1 register, 2 reports, and the home page. Exposé shows only three: the two reports plus either the register or the home page, but not both.
I go to the register and open the split editor window as you suggested.
Now Exposé shows only two windows: the 2 reports, nothing else.
If I close the split editor window I'm back at stage 1. This can be repeated.

Hi Allan,
What version of Java are you using? Is there an update to Java for your operating system available?

Scott: my Java version is currently shown as 1.6.0_33.
My operating system is OS X 10.6.8. If I click on "Software Updates" in the Apple menu, there's a short pause and then I get the message "Your software is up to date." I'm hoping that's the answer to your question.

Hi Allan,
Thanks for the information! We've been unable to duplicate this issue on Mac OS X Lion, but we're going to test Snow Leopard in a few days and get back to you.
