Problems sending bills with Key Bank

Ever since I have used MD, I have often received the following message when sending bills...

"There was an error communicating with your financial institution. The details of this error are below. I'm sorry, an error occurred. The details of this error are below.
Error Description: java.lang.Exception: Server did not acknowledge payment message"

I often thought of this as a nuisance more than anything, but it has been happening a lot more lately. Plus tonight I am also getting this message:

"There was an error communicating with your financial institution. The details of this error are below. The error code reported by the server was: 2014
PAYMENT DATE IS TOO EARLY FOR PROCESSING"

The payment date I have entered is most assuredly not too early for processing. Any thoughts on what this could be? I have the latest build of MD (2008r4 643) and updated Snow Leopard. Thanks much!

I too, am all of the sudden getting these errors. I am with Wells Fargo and had no problems until the last couple of days. I am using both vista and XP and get the errors on both. Unfortunately, this is more than a nuisance as I rely on the bill pay quite heavily and I cant get any through now. Help.

    Hi,

Recently, a number of users have suddenly started experience problems with bill payments not being acknowledged. We're looking into this bug right now and it's proving to be very elusive. There seems to be something going on with the way some banks have started configuring their servers. Unfortunately, right now we don't have a solution or workaround for the problem. We hope to have a fix implemented in Moneydance 2010.

I'm sorry I don't have better news for you. Hopefully we'll have a fix soon.

I'm having this same issue with Wells Fargo. Previously I was able to get it to temporarily work by clicking the "Reset Sync" button under "Setup Online Bill Payment" but this isn't working now either.

I'm looking forward to a fix for this issue - without bill pay, Moneydance is pretty much worthless to me.

    Hi Angie,

I am still having this issue as well with MD 2010 (including all of the beta releases that I've been testing). I would be willing to send you any logs or error reports if that would make tracking this down easier.

I have also been having this problem with MD2010 build 735. I have been trying to use bill pay with PNC Bank. It does work very occasionally. My Mac System Version: Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L30); all the latest Apple update have been made. Error report is as above: "There was an error communicating with your financial institution. The details of this error are below. I'm sorry, an error occurred. The details of this error are below. Error description: java.lang.Exception: Server did not acknowledge."

And, as I have confirmed with PNC Bank support, no transactions were received.

    Hi Allan and Kelly,

Thanks for your reports. We though bug in Moneydance that we thought we had fixed for 2010, but it's obviously still a problem. Thanks for letting us know. I've sent your reports on to Sean (our lead developer). I'll let you know when we have a new build to try.

    Sorry for the continued inconvenience!

I have just started using Moneydance (2010r2 (735)) and I also get an error when I try to pay a bill online with Key bank. Transactions download with no problem, but if I'm going to keep using it I need to be able to pay bills too!

Moneydance 2010r2 (735) Mac OSX Online payments with Key Bank worked for a few transactions and then stopped. I now get the java error message. Inability to pay bills on line is a serious deficit for me.

    Thanks

I still get the error with Wells Fargo. What can we do to get this particular problem bumped up on the priority list? I see all the items addressed in the next revision and its got many items that appear to be far less important than this core function. Do we need to follow a process to make this one happen?

    Thanks,

    Mitch

    Hi All,

We're definitely still aware of and working on this problem. I personally bug Sean about it on a regular basis. Unfortunately, because the problem is so intermittent and irregular, we have yet to nail down exactly where the error is, and so we've been unable to fix it. We've been looking through the mountains of error logs we've gotten (as well as the OFX specifications) in an effort the figure out what's going on. So far, no luck. :-(

But I just wanted to let you know that it is high on our priority list to fix this problem and we are still working on it. If we have a breakthrough, we'll definitely let you know here.

    Hi Mitch,

Unfortunately, while we've made a little progress, I'm not yet sure if it's working yet. We have had a few customers report that bill payments suddenly started working regularly, but I'm not yet sure if that's just a fluke or if the company that runs Key Bank's OFX server finally fixed something on their end.

If you update to the latest version of Moneydance and reset your connection to Key, do you have better luck with bill pay? You can download the latest update (build 743) from our website at http://moneydance.com/trac/wiki/Moneydance2010Beta.

I came here looking for a solution to the same problem that has been going on forever. I have the latest build (743), running on a Macbook Pro, 4GB RAM, Intel processor. In the past, typically I receive the Java.lang.Exception: Server did not acknowledge payment message and simply trying submitting again was successful.

Today I try that and it continually fails. This is serious as I also rely on paying bills through Moneydance. The only way around that is to write and mail a check, yuck!

I've seen for months assurances that it is being worked on, but having been a software development manager, it is obvious that this issue does not have top priority. My top reason for purchasing Moneydance was the ability to pay bills online through the software and now it doesn't do that.

Is this issue your top priority and when will it be fixed?

Well, after submitting this comment (and an email), I tried it again and this time received a different error message that the payment date was too early (it was set to be paid four days later). I changed it to be six days later and resubmitted and this time it went through!

I wonder if the wrong error message is being produced. In other words if the payment date truly is too soon, then perhaps MD is kicking out a somewhat related error message but not the true message that would make sense to the user?

    Hi Terry,

I'm sorry to say that we still haven't made much progress on fixing this bug. We have discovered a common thread amoung the banks having this problem, namely that they all use the same third-party OFX provider. Thus far, my attempts to get in touch with someone at that company have been fruitless. Sean and I are still trying to figure out the best why to work around the error without messing up the bill pay process.

Since both of the error messages you received come straight from the bank's servers and are just displayed by Moneydance, my guess is that the payment date to soon error is separate from the payment acknowledgment error. However, I'll definitely mention it to Sean, in case my understanding is wrong of it is indeed a clue to the problem. At this point, any breakthrough would be great!

Still having the problem sending an online payment instruction. Today on the first attempt I received an error message that the payment date was too soon. So I adjusted it to be two weeks out and tried again, and again and again... the error message that I now am getting is the java.lang.Exception: Server did not acknowledge payment message. Sigh....

But wait, there's more! After trying seven times, it was finally accepted. I wonder if Internet traffic has anything to do with intermittent problems, understandably a programmer's nightmare.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's a network issue. When I send payments at my house (with a fast connection), it generally goes through in three or four tries. When I try at work (slow connection), it almost never works.

    Hi Kelly,

The networking issue is a new wrinkle. When you retry, do you retry immediately usually? If you wait a minute in between attempts, does it go through with any fewer attempts?

    Hi Jessica,

I normally just press the Enter key until it goes through (so no, I don't wait). I sent three payments today:

The first two, I waited for a minute after the first error, and they both went through on the second attempt.

The third payment, waiting didn't seem to help - it took 5 tries to go through, waiting for a minute after each error message.

Being a software engineer, it has always seemed somewhat odd to me that the "Did not Acknowledge" error message was shown so soon after attempting to send the payment (fairly instantaneously, it seems). If the server isn't acknowledging the payment, shouldn't there be a longer timeout involved? Just a guess, as I don't know anything about the protocol being used. But it would explain why my payments never work when I'm on a slow connection - the response from the server just hasn't had time to be received.

For tech support info: I have this issue with US Bank - same errors. So far (only sent a few payments) I have been able to get the online payments sent by adding a couple of days to the payment date.

    Hello everyone,

I'm sorry for the delay in responding on this thread. Thanks for your patience while we work on this bug. We've just uploaded a new build which implements a new fix for this bug. This is the first crack at implementing the new solution, so we're not sure it will work, but we'd love to get some folks testing it. You can download build 752 from our website at http://moneydance.com/preview/752/. It would be great if those of you who are willing to test this would install this build and let us know if it fixes this bug for you.

Thanks once again for your patience! Hopefully we're finally approaching a solution here.

    Hi Jessica,

I tried two payments - the first one went through fine. The second one gave me the "Server did not acknowledge payment message" error. I was able to get the second one to go through after three tries.

I've also noticed that any payments I can't get to go through after repeated attempts, if I increase the due date by two days, it always goes through on the first try.

    Hi Kelly,

It sounds like the fix didn't work. If you're willing, could you please send me logs of your payment attempt(s)? We'd like to compare them to previous logs to see if anything has changed. Here's how to get the logs in Moneydance 2010:

    1) In Moneydance, click on the Help menu and select the Console Window option. This will open the console messages window.
    2) While the Console Window is open, attempt to pay a bill. Any error messages should be recorded to the Console.
    3) Select all of the text in the Console and use the "Copy to Clipboard" button at the bottom to copy the text.
    4) Paste the text from the message window into a text file (preferably saved with a .txt extension) and email it to me at [email blocked].

The debugging logs that this produces will contain your account information, so please don't attach the file to this discussion, since this is a public forum. Just to be safe you should redact any account info in the debug logs. Just replace it with something like "ACCOUNT NUMBER HERE" and it should be fine.
