Hi Michael,
Look under the 'Extensions' menu for 'Import File'

Actually that one doesn’t work. I fill in the field description but it returns an error "csv not supported" or something similar.
Using the Text File Importer and the field set up works only partially as my banks output CSV has negative numbers for payments and these are returned as zero!
Any suggestions would be useful. I have been having a row with my bank as they used to support various downloads but recently upgraded the website but downgraded the download options

Hi Office,
Can you attach a sample of the .CSV file that you are working with? I'll try to help you with it. Make sure that there is no sensitive data in it before posting.

Hi Michael,
One issue I see in your CSV file is that there are separate debit and credit columns, which the Text File Importer extension doesn't support. The CSV importer extension only supports a limited number of formats (specific financial institutions), so if it doesn't import your file and your financial institution only exports CSV files, then you have to use the Text File Importer extension.
What I would suggest is using a spreadsheet application to merge the Debit GDP columns and the Credit GDP columns. The Debit GDP column, in the sample file you provided, will be empty when there's a credit and vice versa, so it should be fairly easy to merge. You should then be able to import the file using these fields in the Text File Importer extension (taking into account that there will be one fewer fields in the CSV file due to merging the debit and credit columns):
If your financial institution supports exporting in either QFX/OFX or QIF formats, however, that would be better and easier to import than CSV files.

They used to but "upgraded" their website and downgraded the output to CSV only.
Ill try what you have suggested.

Hi Scott,
That really isn't quite accurate. The CSV importer is capable of maintaining cutomized user defined readers.
Hi Michael,
Try using the CSV Importer again. When it opens, click on 'Maintain Custom File Readers'.
Set up the custom file reader per the attached screenshot. (note the changes to the date format in the upper right-hand corner.
When you're done, click 'Add', 'Save' and 'Done'.
Back at the main CSV window,
Click the Browse (...) button and navigate to your .CSV file.
Select your Bank account from the drop down list.
For my test, I used 'Online' for the 'Import Transactions as:' option.

Hi Michael,
I noticed that there is a newer version of the CSV Importer than what I was using. Essentially, the difference is that it includes a 'File Encoding' option. Choose 'UTF-8'.

How does this help with the file I sent you?

Attached screenshot. As you can see it still doesn't like this file.
Any idea why it works for you but not for me?

As you can see from attached screen shot it doesn’t really like this for some reason.

Hi Office,
Can you post a screenshot of the 'Custom Reader' form? (like the one in my post # 8)

Hi Office,
Change the separators in the 'Date Format' from dashes (DD-MM-YYYY) to forward slashes (DD/MM/YYYY)
Column options 6 and 7 should both be set to '-Payment-'.
This should now work for you.
If so, you can now go back to the custom reader and change the 'Reader Name' to more accurately reflect the name of the financial institution that you're using it with.

As you can see it still doesn’t like it.
I have amended the set up exactly as per your suggestion. Interesting that it works for you but not for me. Why could that be?

Hi Michael,
After you made the changes to the custom reader, did you click 'Save' so that the changes were applied?
Aside from that I can not think of why it's not working for you.
Just so you don't think that I'm pulling your leg, I've attached a screenshot of the register.

Not sure what I ma doing differently.
Here is todays file. I haven’t touched it or done anything other than download from bank.
If you can get this to work perhaps you can screenshot your file set up table and also walk me through its use step by step. I have obviously missed a step somewhere.

Hi Michael,
This most recent file also imported cleanly for me.
The steps that I outlined in my post # 8 are the steps you should follow.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the correction! I hadn't realized the CSV import extension had that feature (as the newest support staff member, as I'm sure you're aware, I'm still learning things), so I'll remember that for the future.

Hi Scott,
Yea the CSV Importer is pretty versatile but a bit temperamental.
Hi Michael,
Just to make sure, you are the same poster as 'Office'. Correct?
Are you able to import your CSV file now? It sounds like you had it working from your post # 19.
