I am using a standard budget item "Automotive: Fuel: that appears in the dropdown of categories when I post a transaction but does not show up on the left hand side of the home screen under the budget. Anyone having a similar problem?

    Hi,
The budget list on the sidebar will display the budgets listed in Tools->Budget Manager and not budget items. Do these two lists match up? Please let me know if this makes sense and if I am understanding your problem correctly.
    Sincerely,

Yes, that is true. I went through and deleted all of the "Default Budget Categories" and added my own. I noticed that the amounts I entered into the Automobile:Fuel were duplicated so I deleted the one that I had added using Tools->Budget manager and the totals were corrected. The category "Automotive" shows up in the "dropdown" categories when I enter a transaction and appear on the reports. Is it not supposed to appear on the left hand column under budgets? If this is the way it is supposed to work then there is no way to just look at "Automotive expense" with out generating a report on Income and expenses.
It does not appear in the dropdown at the top of the window either.

    Max,

I think you might be talking about the Budget Bars or Expenses Graph on the Homepage. You can find information on using the Budget Bars beginning on page 35 of the Moneydance 2011 user guide here.  To have categories (not just accounts) displayed in the dropdown at the top left of the window, you'll need to check the "Show all accounts in Pop-up" box in your Moneydance preferences. For more details on adjusting your preferences, check out page 11 of the Moneydance 2011 user guide here

Thanks for using Moneydance, and please let me know if I can be of further assistance,

No I am not talking about either. I have attached a screen shot with annotation showing where I am talking about.

    Hi Max,

Try clicking on the big plus sign ( + ) at the bottom of the side bar and see if it's listed there.
If so, highlight it and click 'Add'
If not, make sure that the Automotive:Fuel budget is listed in the 'Budget Manager' (Menu bar > Tools > Budget Manager)

Just as an FYI, you don't need to create separate budgets for each item that you want to keep tabs on. You can include any or all of those items as separate line items in one singular budget. (see attached screenshot)

Kevin: I deleted all Automotive categories, re-added them and then used the budget manager to add budget. Everything is working okay now. Probably user error in understanding of how categories and budgets interact with each other.

    Thanks for your help.....
