I am not support staff, just a user.
Perhaps a screen shot would help support and others understand your issue.
Also can you post the version/build of moneydance you are running. See under HELP - ABOUT MONEYDANCE. e.g. 2017.8(1678).
What operating system is your computer running?

Many thanks for your interest.. The system i am running on is 2017.6 (1656) and, hopefully, I will have included a screen shot. If the screen shot does not work then the opening panel looks like the following; My Finances 3-2-20180502-1506-20180503-0858,continuing on for at least twice as much again. it is obvious that it starts with the date in reverse order, then the next set of figures is the time, then on to the date again, etc. hope this all helps
\again my sincere thanks for you interest. sorry it will not allow my file, one of the problems of being old and an amateur

Your screen shot did not appear. You need to post it on the web site, attaching it to an email does not work. Site link to your thread is http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/problems/45215-how-do-i-re...
From your description your data set has had time stamps added. This is normal if you restore an export backup. Do this several times and a new time stamps get added each time giving you a string of time stamps.
Do a FILE – EXPORT BACKUP is case something goes wrong. Then click HELP – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER. This should open a file finder. Close Moneydance. Then rename your data set leaving the extension “.moneydance”. Open Moneydance. It should open in the Welcome to Moneydance window with your renamed data set listed on the right. Open this.
I would update free to the latest released build of 2017 that is 2017.7.1(1671), it fixes a number of bugs.
Hope this helps.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, absolutely brilliant. I have downloaded the update as suggested and followed your advice on renaming--perfect, it went like clockwork. I have printed off your advice and will keep for future reference. One last question, do you know why it happened and how i can avoid the problem in the future? Again my sincere thanks, you were brilliant.

From your description your data set had a time stamps added. This is normal if you restore a backup that was created using FILE – EXPORT BACKUP and then restored this backup using FILE – RESTORE FROM BACKUP. Do this several times and a new time stamps get added each time giving you a string of time stamps. If you haven’t followed this process at some time then I don’t know what happened.
But glad renaming has got you back to were you won’t to be.

I'm a fellow user.
The only way I can think of to get a data set with the appended date/time information is to do a restore from backup. If you then do not do a rename you just have this restored data set with the date/time in the name. If you use this restored backup and do the same thing again you ended up with a file with two appended date/times etc etc.
You only need to do a restore from backup and use this data if you have a problem with your data and need to go back to an older version of the data, i.e, before the problem occurred. In such a case you are likely to rename the restore data before using it. the software appends the date/time in order to prevent it overwriting any data that you may want/need
