archive
user manual says to File -> Archive. does not exist [using 2017.7.1]
so how to strip out transactions older than X ?

I'm a fellow user.
The archive function was removed part way through Moneydance 2015's life time.
The feature was causing too many data integrity issues especially with Investment accounts where arbitrarily removing transactions before a specific date can be a disaster.
It is recommended to use features like the filters to remove certain data from being displayed. Generally having older data does not cause any issues and having it facilitates over time reporting.
