Hi
I have been forced to re-build my windows machine and I now have two problems

1. I have downloaded a new copy of MoneyDance, but I can't remember my registration code. My copy of MoneyDance tells me I'm in demo mode.

2. I'm maintaining my accounts on my iPhone. I'm backing this up to DropBox but I cannot see where it is backing up to within Dropbox, therefore I cannot choose an appropriate backup file to restore my info. When I go into the dropbox files, It seems like there's millions of files......

Can you help me with the above, please?

I am not support staff, just a user.

Enter the email you used to purchase Moneydance in the lost key box at
    https://infinitekind.com/purchase
remember the key you purchase is valid for the version of Moneydance at the time of purchase plus the next version from then on you get a 50% discount.

The iPhone Moneydance App does not create any backups. Having said that there is a way to recover your data to your computer provided it was Moneydance 2017 you were using before you rebuilt your computer. Post the version you were running and if it’s 2017 I will post a recovery procedure.

Another way is to restore a backup manual or automatic created by Moneydance by your computer unless theses backups were on your hard drive and not in Dropbox.

    Hope this helps

    Hi!

Thanks for helping out – I really appreciate it!

The version I was using was 2017.7 I think So I’d be grateful put me in the know about a recovery procedure. I was backing up to DropBox, but when I check in there, there are any amount of files created. Not one seems to be an appropriate date….

Anyway, thanks once again in anticipation of your assistance

I am not support staff, just a user.

I have outlined a process for recovering a data set from the “.moneydancesync “folder in Dropbox below, but first a outlines concerning Moneydance backup I did for another user in case it helps in finding a valid backup.

Moneydance has two methods for making a backup.
The default backup location can be found under HELP – SHOW ARCHIVE FOLDER. This location is on your hard drive. In both cases you can select the backup location and as such it is good practice to set the location on a cloud server such as Dropbox, in case your hard drive fails.
Manual backup. A manual backup can be made under FILE – BACKUP EXPORT. The file naming convention is yourdatasetname-yyyymmdd-tttt.moneydancearchive
Automatic backup is set under FILE – PREFERENCES – BACKUPS. Auto backup makes a backup every time you close Moneydance. Moneydance only keep the last auto backup of the day, overwriting any previous auto backups for that day. You can set the number of backups to be kept. When this number is exceeded the oldest backup is deleted. The file naming convention is yourdatasetname.yyyy-mm-dd.moneydancearchive
When a backup is made, if you were syncing, the syncing method is set to don’t sync. Your password is not reset, you still need it to do a restore from backup. A moneydancearchive file is a compressed data set.
The contents of a backup file is AES256 encrypted and provided you have set a password under FILE – PASSWORDS can only be opened by Moneydance by entering your password after using FILE – RESTORE FROM BACKUP.
When you FILE – RESTORE FROM BACKUP you do not overwrite your existing data set, a new data set is created with the naming convention – from manual backup yourdatasetname-yyyymmdd-tttt.moneydance the date time code taken from the backup file - from auto backup yourdatasetname (plus at number) e.g. yourdatasetname 2.moneydance The default data set location can be found under HELP – SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER. You can rename a restored data set with Moneydance closed as you would any other folder provided you retain “.moneydance” extension. A data set is a folder not a file containing other folders and files. When you open Moneydance it will open in the “Welcome to Moneydance” window with the data set name listed on the right.

Recovering a data set from a “.moneydancesync” folder created in in Dropbox when using 2017.
In Dropbox make a copy of the folder “.moneydancesync” with a different name and store in a safe place.
In Moneydance click FILE – NEW – OPEN SYNCED FILE. Use the dropdown to set the same sync method as you were using. Enter the same passphrase as before and start syncing. If your data set is synced back into your computer you may need to tidy things up. Particularly the things listed in the side bar. Use the “+” at the bottom. You will probably find under FILE – SYNCING that you can’t set a syncing method so you need to convert your data set as below.

Create a backup using the FILE - EXPORT BACKUP.

To use the file md2017_convert_secondary_to_master.py, first download it to your computer and then follow these steps:

    1. In Moneydance, select Window --> Python Scripting.
    2. In the window that opens, select 'Open Script' then navigate to the .py file wherever you saved it on your system.
    3. Select 'Run' to execute the file.
    4. Wait a few moments until you see a message on screen, confirming the script has run successfully.
    5. Close Moneydance and then reopen it.

You should now have recovered your data set and be good to go.

    Hope this helps
