New Version 2017.8.1 won't run

My OS is Windows 10 64-bit Home. I have been running MD for over a couple of years now mostly without problems other than the stock quotes issue and scripting but these have more or less been fixed.

I am unable to get this latest version (8.1 I think) to run on my system. I have tried the 32 and 64 bit versions but neither work. I don't have problems with any other software on my system, just this update. I even tried uninstalling and wiping any trace of MD from my computer except for the backup data file. Still won't work. If I go back to 2017.7.1, then MD operates just fine. I also update Java but that had no effect. I saw that someone else had a similar issue but their OS was Linux.

Is anyone else having this problem?

IK, can you help here?

Thanks in advance,
DC

Here's a possible solution that you may like to try, nothing to loose!

If you're comfortable with editing files try this...

This will Increase MD Memory usage.

    Open Notepad as an Administrator.

From the menu bar, go to File > Open. Select the 'All Files ( * . * )' option from the drop-down.

    Navigate to C:\ Program Files \ Moneydance \ Moneydance.vmoptions

Enter a # in front of the line -Xmx1024m

Remove the # in front of the line -Xmx2048m

Close the file and save the changes.

    Now try running MD.

    Hello Jeff and MD Programmers,

Under version 2017.7.1, the max memory is capped at 1GB and it works just fine. Why would 8.1 require more memory to be available? Further, IF this were to ‘fix’ the problem, then why can’t MD Programmers be more robust in their programming so that the end-user would never need to edit a VM Options file?

I say, don’t put out an ‘update’ that doesn’t run. Simple!

While I am here, I want to point out something else that irks me about MoneyDance. I switched from Quicken in 2016. At that time, I had financial transactions going back to 1996. That is 20yrs of credit card, bank, and investment transactions that fit into a file less than 200KB. I imported all that data into MoneyDance and spent 2wks cleaning everything up. Last year, I checked the size of my data file for MD and it was over 300KB. Wow, in one year the data file had grown by more than 50%!!! Well, a year later my data file is now over 500KB!!!. WHAT IS MONEYDANCE DOING THAT IS CAUSING MY DATA FILE TO GROW SOOOOOO LARGE SO QUICKLY? I assure everyone that my transactions have not increased 1000% since switching to MD. Perhaps MD is storing each of my transaction downloads??? Whatever it is it is ridiculous. Apparently my data file is filled with unnecessary info that does not need to be there. I would point out that it takes a considerable amount of time to OPEN MD and far longer to simply CLOSE MD.

Let’s go MD Programmers. Figure out how to trim our data files of unnecessary junk. Oh yeah, make updates that actually work for everyone.

    Thanks for listening,

    Dave Clark

The multiple transaction files are to implement the sync functionality. They are kept around for a long time (forever) since it is not clear how old a remote synch file may be.

Hmmm, let’s try this out. How about an option to not sync and therefore dump all that trash that is hanging around in my data file?

Clearly, MD needs more advancement to get past this ‘barbaric’ method of “sync functionality”. I DON’T WANT A 500KB+ DATA FILE WHEN I KNOW IT EASILY FITS INTO 200KB. It seems to me that could be why OPENING and CLOSING MD takes so long because of all the ‘sync’ junk hanging around in my data file. Pull the plug and drain the sink (pun intended).
