Entries not being saved
I'm looking for a replacement for Quicken and thought this might do it. However, I have twice entered about thirty deposits into a split entry. I've saved the entry and quit. I also have preferences set to save on Quit.
When I relaunch MD, ALL MY ENTRIES ARE LOST!! This is obviously not OK. Now what??
Over to you.

I've read several posts and saw some frequently repeated questions. So, to supplement my post, I'm running 10.6.2 on a MBP, 2.4 GHz, 4 GB RAM. Here's the full text of the error log:
Starting Moneydance 2010 BETA (721) using Java 1.6.0_17 ...
showing account: Checking

Hope this helps.

Hi. I've been away from this for a few days. I
downloaded the latest build [Moneydance 2010r2
(735)]. I have a brand new MacBook Pro. I had
migrated over my account, so the new computer
still has account information. I deleted the
former version of MoneyDance, together with its
-.plist and the account data that I had tried to
use before before.
Anyway, I am still having the same problem. After
reinstallation, I created a brand new account
using the "basic" choice. I made "Miscellaneous"
the default category.
I then made several bonus entries which were
saved. I then went to "Edit Categories" and
clicked on the "New" button. That opened a window
called category [when I went to the create a new
category window, it opened a window called "New
Category". I checked "Expense" and went to
"Next>". That opened a window called "Create
Account: Expense". I found that confusing b/c I
was trying to make a new category, not a new
account. It definitely should say "category"
instead of "account", since account is something
else. Anyway, I assumed it meant Create
"Category" and named it "Attire". I then went to
make more entries, using Attire as the category.
I had several related deposits, so entered
several amounts in the "split" window.
Here's specifically what I did: in the "Checking"
window, showing the account register, I hit
Cmd-N. It auto entered today's date. I tabbed
into Check#, clicked on the up/down arrows and
highlighted "dep". I tabbed to Description,
entered "Clothing" and tabbed to Category. I used
the up/down arrows again and highlighted "Attire"
and clicked on "Split". A window called "Edit
Splits" opened. I tabbed over to Deposit and
entered an amount. I then hit Cmd-N and repeated
the process in the split window. After entering
several similar entries in the split, I clicked
"Done", and the window closed. In the Register
window, the line showed the correct amount for
deposit total.
I then closed the window by clicking on the red
button in the upper left and then quit MD. I
immediately re-opened the account. Where I had
entered attire and the splits, there was still a
line item. The line item indicated a category of
"Miscellaneous", had no total amount and there
was nothing in the "Edit Splits" window. All of
the entries were lost.
As you can imagine, this is terribly frustrating.
I like the UI for MoneyDance, but, so far, it has
failed to deliver. Can you tell me what I'm doing
wrong? Obviously, data is not being saved.
HELP!!!
Thank you,
George Richardson

Hi George
Moneydance does not save the data file after you enter each transaction. You must either manually save the file by selecting File->Save or if you prefer select File->Preferences and on the General tab check th9e option "Save on every quit."

Thanks for the very quick response.
I'm still a bit puzzled, but things may be
working out. I have "Save on every quit" checked,
and I have "Auto-Save" set for 2 minutes.
Shouldn't that have saved the data?
Nonetheless, I re-opened the file I had been
working on, Cmd-N for new entry, selected
Category and opened Split, made several entries
in the split. Hit Cmd-S, hit Cmd-W to close the
screen, hit Cmd-S again, then, for the very first
time, a window opened asking if I wanted to save
the transaction. I said yes and everything was
saved. After quitting and re-opening, the data
was still there! I made screen shots of every
step along the way.
It sounds like maybe the problem had to do with
the Save Transaction screen not opening. This
time, I was going very slowly, which suggests
that maybe there needs to be a pause after
closing the split screen. I can live with that,
but it seems very odd.
Also, I note that the red button in the upper
left does not indicate that there is unsaved work
while I make entries, leading me to believe that
entries are saved. See the attached screen shot.
I'll work a bit more on the account, but the cue
about unsaved data in the red dot is a bug that
should be corrected.
Back to you,
George Richardson

OK. I've tried this again. I simply can't figure
out what I could be doing wrong, but the data in
splits is not being saved.
I created a new account, deleted several unuseful
categories, clicked on checking, added "Attire"
as a category, and keyed in Cmd-N. In the entry
line, clicked on the category "Attire" and
clicked on "Split". I then made four entries,
keyed Cmd-S, clicked on "Done" and ended up in
the account window. This all seemed perfectly
normal. Back at the registry page, I noted that
the entry line showed that there was a total of
$359 in the entry I'd just made, but the balance
line at the lower right of the page says 0.00.
The red button does not indicate that there is
any unsaved data. Nonetheless, I went to the File
menu and clicked on save. I then quit. Upon
re-opening, the data entered into the split was
gone!!!!!!!!!
Why is this happening!!!????
Back to you.

Does this relate to my problem that I was having with saving changes in investment accounts? http://help.infinitekind.com/discussions/problems/661-md-build-725-...

Hi George
I think I know what is going on here. After you enter the splits in the split window and click the done button you are taken back to the transaction register. At this point the new split transaction is still in edit mode. It is not yet recorded into the register. If you save here the new split transaction will not be written to the file. You must first press the enter key to record the split transaction to the register. Once the split transaction is in the register it will save,
Please verify that this is the case.
Sincerely
Ben Spencer

Ben, would this have any application to the problem I was having regarding making changes in the investment register? I was in the "securities detail" screen where I double clicked on a transaction which then opened up the register and I made the change in the register. Was there an additional step I needed to take after I entered the change?

jbnyt,
If you make a change to a transaction it is necessary to press enter on your keyboard to apply the change to the register. If the transaction was still in edit mode the changes would not be saved.

Maybe that was the problem. Everything seems ok now. Thanks.

That may have done it. I re-opened MD, hit Cmd-N,
entered Attire again and went to the Split
window. After making several Split entries as
previously described, I clicked Done. Upon return
to the register page, I hit Return and heard a
very satisfying "K-Ching" and saw the entry in
the top part of the registry.
I quit and re-opened and the entry with all the
split information was still there.
If this solves the problem, then the MoneyDance
documentation REALLY Really must be fixed so that
the user knows that the red button is
meaningless, user data is not saved unless and
until the user has clicked Enter or Return in the
Register window. I doubt that I am alone in
depending on the red dot to be an accurate
indicator of the status of my data. Like all
users, I assume that this is an easy fix. ;-)
Let's see if this works now.
Thanks,
George Richardson

I spent several hours yesterday entering data and
using Splits. Everything seems to be working OK.
So today, I went to buy MD. While we were having
our discussion, the price was $14.95. Now it
seems to be $39.95.
How do I get the $14.95 price?
Thanks,
George Richardson

Hi George
Where did you see the price at $14.95? The price has been $39.95 for as long as i can remember.

It was posted on your website and sent in an
email, which I don't find right now, but probably
could. The gist of the message was that MD had
gotten lots of feed back about its price and that
it was making a turn of the year offer to sell
the license at $14.95.

Hi George
There is a blog post about a 20% discount here
http://moneydance.com/blog/
If that is not what your were referring to could you provide a copy of the email?

Hi. I searched through my emails and server and
discovered that it's my misrecollection. I was
looking at a new email client at the same time as
I was looking at a new accounts package. It is
the email client that offered the price
reduction. My bad!
Thanks,
GeorgeR.
