    Hi Joan,

If I understand you correctly, I have two things that might help...

    1) To help with viewing the Summary Page:
From the Moneydance menu bar, go to File > Preferences.
In the resulting form, click the 'Summary Page' tab.
Set all of the desired items to one side of the screen so that they form a single column on your Summary page.

    2) To help with viewing the register...
Key-combo CTRL-SHIFT-S toggles the left side bar on and off from view.
Use CTRL-SHIFT-S to temporarily hide the left side bar, giving the register more room to expand.
Also, in the Preferences form on the 'General' tab, set the 'Show Selection Details' option to 'In a separate popup'. This should prevent the right-side Confirmation sidebar from scrunching up the register.

    Thanks.

Your initial suggestion helped. Trying to find a replacement for quicken. Have one for the investment end. (PC). Just need one for tracking expenses.

Also, in the Preferences form on the 'General' tab, set the 'Show Selection Details' option to 'In a separate popup'. This should prevent the right-side Confirmation sidebar from scrunching up the register.

Couldn’t find this item ('Show Selection Details') in the preferences section.

    Hi Joan,

If not a member of MD support.= who are you?

These are public forums. They are monitored by MD support as well as a knowledgeable user base. I humbly include myself in the latter. :)

have you been using MD long?

I've been using Moneydance since 2008/9 when Microsoft ended support for their MS Money PFM software.

I continue to use MS Money along side of Moneydance. I think some of MS Money's reporting is stronger than that of MD.

    Like it I gather?

There's a lot to like. MD offers a free, trial version. They offer a free upgrade to the next major release. (provided that you purchase the program through the MD website) They don't sunset older versions. e.g. I continue to keep a version of MD 2011 up to date. The syncing mechanism in MD 2017 is pretty unique.

Try any other programs like this?

I was weened on Microsoft Money. There is a free version that's still available from the Microsoft website.

There is also a free program called Pocketsense that allows users to download stock quotes and download OFX data from those financial institutions that provide OFX servers and import it all into MS Money. It essentially restores MS Money to it's original usefulness before Microsoft pulled the plug on it.

. I think some of MS Money's reporting is stronger than that of MD. For what items? Never used ms money. Used quicken for 20+ years.

Two-Factor Authentication - money dance doesn’t have this. Quicken does. Is it an issue? for you? also countabout is another program I may look at. Have you ever checked it out.?

The syncing mechanism in MD 2017 is pretty unique. What does this mean?

    Thanks again.

    Hi Joan,

MS Money's investment account reporting seems to be more accurate. I've noticed some anomalies in MD's investment reporting that are just flat out wrong. e. g. a negative investment return in the portfolio report of more than 100%.

Re: Two-factor authorization. I'm not sure how that plays into it. Are you referring to password protecting the data file? The MD data file can be password protected. It is also encrypted and no data is sent to any third-party server, other than your particular financial institution(s).

I've never used countabout. MS Money and Moneydance is it. I tried a version of Quicken once that came included on an old Windows 95 PC that I bought. I didn't like it.

The syncing mechanism in MD allows you to maintain a data file on one machine and have it sync up to a data file on any number of other machines. The syncing mechanism works both ways. There are also Android and i-Phone apps that sync to the data file but I have no experience with them.

So you could keep it on two computers? A pc and a laptop and it would synch the data somehow?

    Hi Joan,

That's correct. I have my primary data file on a desktop and two secondary data files on two laptops. I generally enter everything on the desktop. That data then syncs with the two laptops. The sync does work both ways so I could enter data from one of the laptops and have it sync to the other two. I just find it easier to use a full keyboard so I use the desktop for most of the data entry.

I should also mention that when you purchase a license key for MD. It allows you to install the program on as many machines as you like regardless of the OS. MD runs on Mac, PC and Linux. The data file is OS-neutral.

Here are links for more info on the rather liberal licensing policy.

    I'm a fellow user.

Joan, you are correct. the software passes encrypted transaction data between instances on different machines using a service like dropbox to provide a shared location that all machines can access.

Backup. Do you backup your data in the program? If so where or what is it under? Found the program on my computer but not sure where the data is since I have hardly anything in it.

When I buy the program and automatically down load charges will it eventually know what to call them if they are ones that are repeated or will I always have to enter the category.? Eg Sudbury farms always food or grocery or whatever I initially label it as.

Over time Moneydance "learns" from previously confirmed transactions and will make suggestions based on correlating the new transaction with earlier transactions.

    Hi Joan,

The easiest way to locate your Moneydance data file is from within Moneydance.

From the MD menu bar, go to Help > Show Documents Folder.
A file browser will open to the default location for MD data files.
It's a good idea to know and understand this location.

The data file will be in the following format:
    filename.moneydance
where filename is the name that you gave to the data file.
