Dropbox/Network Syncing with MD 2012
Can someone share information on how this new Syncing is supposed to work in MD 2012? I installed the latest version, enabled the dropbox sync and it does put some reference files in dropbox, but I don't see anyway to get MD installed on other computers to use those files.
I would have assumed that the syncing would have been working since you have released MD 2012 for all platforms. But I couldn't find anyway to do that and there isn't any help for that either. I use MD on 2 Windows Machines and 1 Mac.
I'm still not a huge fan of the auto location and saving of the file, but if that is how it is going, I'd at least like to have it syncing correctly with my machines. The mobile syncing for Android is another matter, but sounds like that is being worked on anyway.
Also it would be nice to be able to choose my dropbox location in MD. On my Mac I move my personal dropbox to a different location, so as it is now, I can't choose that location for dropbox to sync too. This needs to be changed.
Let me know if there is a way to have that working, or if I need to just not try the update until it's fixed. Also would be nice to have a link to download the last version of 2011, v808.

Hi TJ,
The built in Dropbox syncing on the 2012 version is currently limited to syncing between Moneydance and iOS devices and Android via Handybank (which is currently being updated to support the new changes). We are working on a new method for syncing data across Moneydance desktop/laptop applications, but it's unfortunately not ready yet.
The 2012 version of Moneydance uses a new method of connecting to Dropbox that should enable you to have your Dropbox folder anywhere. Syncing is now done by going to File -> Syncing... where the Dropbox syncing options are. You may have to disable and then re-enable Dropbox syncing (which should then take you to a Dropbox page asking your permission to allow Moneydance to access your Dropbox folder) before it will work properly. However, once setup via this method, your Dropbox folder no longer has to be located in a specific location.
If you need Moneydance-to-Moneydance syncing now, here is a link to the 2011 (808) releases:

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance!

Scott,
Thanks for the response. The link to download the 808 version is not working. Says it has been removed from the server.
I don't think I understand the dropbox thing, how does it not matter where the folder is located? On my Mac, I run 2 dropbox accounts at the same time. I use a script that allows me to have 2 running and put them in different locations. (1 is work and 1 is personal) When I enable dropbox sync, it does not give me an option to choose my dropbox folder, just accesses the default location for dropbox (which is the work dropbox, of course I don't want the file in my work dropbox).
If the ability to select a dropbox folder was part of the sync settings that seems like it would allow me to use my current setup.
So the files that get put in dropbox in the .moneydance folder are only for syncing with mobile apps? I also noticed that when I installed it on my mac and then installed it again on my windows machine and enables drpobox sync it put 2 different folders with the sync files in it. Shouldn't the folders be the same so that the sync will always be the same?
Do you have a timeframe on the md to md sync? I think that seems more valuable than the syncing with mobile phones. Frustrating that a new release is made that is missing features that the previous version had.

Hi TJ,
Sorry, the Windows build looks like it was removed, but the Mac OS X build remains present on the preview page.
The Dropbox syncing now works by connecting to Dropbox via their API, rather than writing files into a folder (this should be more convenient for most users, but it's also necessary to work this way for the Mac App Store sandboxing requirements). I'm not sure how this will affect your usage since you run the two folders at the same time.
Syncing sometimes creates more than one folder for some things, but it should work. Please let us know if it doesn't so we can troubleshoot it.
Unfortunately I don't have a timeframe for the Moneydance-to-Moneydance syncing functionality, but it's a very high priority item (if not the top priority), so hopefully it won't be very long.

I'm closing this discussion because James has provided a FAQ for syncing computer to computer with dropbox or other syncing systems. It answers my questions, and gives me some things to try to be able to use MD 2012 on multiple machines through dropbox.
Until the MD team comes up with an integrated solution this is the best way to achieve it. Or just keep using the latest release of 2011.
