It may be that Moneydance is already running but is minimized. I have seen this before with XP. Does the task manager show that MD is running? If Moneydance is actually running but minimized, try right clicking it's icon at the bottom of your screen and choose to maximize the window. Please let me know if something else is causing this and Moneydance is in fact not running at all for some reason.

I'm having the same problem as harperinsurance.
Launch the program, Moneydance splash screen comes up and the program appears to be running minimized with a tab in the system tray. If I click Moneydance in the system tray, it appears that the focus changes from Firefox (or whatever program I am in) to Moneydance . . . but the program never appears.
No duplicate instances listed in Windows Task Manager. In fact, persists after reboot. Uninstalled, re-installed from fresh download, same behavior. Tried opening by double-clicking directly on moneydance data files, same behavior. error.log contains one line: ignoring invalid argument: -Xmx1024m
Any suggestions?
Edit: Using Windows XP, SP3 - been running Moneydance fine until just now.

Hmm... I had a similar problem but running Win7 RC and in my case I had to use Admin login and only then after logging in did I get the Moneydance password screen which I logged in and - voila it came up maximized!
This started after I installed Microsofts MSE beta AV, yes folks living on the edge so I'm prepared to take my lumps here.
I'm not sure if this would help any of you since your using XP but just thought I would pass it on.

What version of java are you using? I suggest upgrading to the latest version of java from sun.

I am using the latest Java build 6.14.

No luck. I am also using 6.14. I tested functionality from the Java
website and everything tests properly and indicates current version. I
uninstalled java from control panel, re-installed and still no luck.
Any other ideas?

Make a copy of your .md data file and then do the following to get a completely fresh start.
Run the uninstall program that comes with Moneydance. This is most likely in "C:\program files\Moneydance" but might be somewhere else if you installed Moneydance to somewhere other than the default location. It is called un install, double click it to run it.
Then Delete the "C:\program files\Moneydance" directory.
I would then uninstall all versions of java that you have installed on your computer using the Windows control panel.
Moneydance also created folder called .moneydance in your user directory to store your Moneydance preferences. This should be in "C:\Documents and Settings\yourUserName". Delete this as well it possible that the preferences files stored here have become corrupted.
Then log in to windows as administrator and install the latest version of Moneydance with java.
If that doesnt work I let me know and I'll investigate further.

Bingo. I followed the below instructions exactly and I'm now back up and
running. Thank you for your help Ben.
I suspect it might have been the .moneydance file that was giving such a
headache.

I am having the same issue, I'm running windows XP on an Asus EEE netbook. I uninstalled and reinstalled with the version with Java, but it still won't load completely. Now, when it's minimized in the taskbar, it says Moneydance (640). Any ideas?

Hi Michelle
It might be that Moneydance is starting up minimised. Try right clicking on Moneydance in the task bar and select Maximise.

I was thinking of upgrading to 640 I am using 579 currently and I have had no problems.
I have downloaded the newest version 640 but now I am not sure if i should try it. Would it damage my moneydance.md file if I tried it?

Hi David
build 640 will not damage your moneydance.md file, they use the same file format and I have had no report of build 640 causing such a problem.. And if you want to be extra sure make a backup copy of your md file first.

Sorry I should have asked this differently, I was thinking of upgrading to the 640 build
but I read about a bug that would make moneydance to load. Is this a moneydance bug or is it a java issue?
15 Posted by Ben Spencer on 22 Aug, 2009 02:07 PM
Hi David
The bug does not prevent moneydance from loading. In some rare situations it loads moneydance in its minimised state on Windows XP. If this happens to you right click on the moneydance item in the task bar to resolve the problem. I believe it is a moneydance bug and not a java bug. Either way it is easily resolved and will not cause any loss of data.
Sincerely
Ben Spencer

Thanks for the above. I hadn't loaded MD since April 09 (Win XP) and it failed to load completely. Wasn't in Win Task Manager. Tried the online Java update which failed. Tried the offline version and it worked. MD loaded! Yay!
So updated MD and I'm back in business.
Think it was caused by using Google Chrome as my browser, which is still not supported by Java. Thought I'd let you know.
Thanks again.
