How to restore Moneydance preferences

After downloading Moneydance 2012 from the web site as an upgrade, I replaced my old version of Moneydance 2011R2 with the new one. The new one was now unregistered, did not know where my Moneydance file was, and when I did load the file, it lost all my preference settings.

I thought if I could restore the old version, and use a backup of the file and plist preferences that I could revert but it did not work. I still had to put my registration in again and my preferences are still lost.

Aside from my concern about this "process", where are the Moneydance preference settings kept? I have a full backup and if I know where to look, I can restore whatever file they're kept in to it's condition prior to the "upgrade".

Thanks

Bob

Where does Moneydance store preferences. I have a full backup done as it happens before I attempted the upgrade. I restored the plist file, but that didn't solve the problem. If I know where Moneydance stores the various preferences, I can restore the file.

    Thanks

    Hi Bob,

The preferences in Moneydance 2011 were stored in your home folder in a hidden folder called .moneydance (note the dot). That folder contains a number of files and other folders. To migrate your preferences and installed extensions, simply copy the contents of your .moneydance folder to the new preferences location. You can get to this location by opening Moneydance 2012, and then clicking on the Help->"Open Documents Folder" menu option. From there, click on these folders: Library->Application Support->Moneydance. You can copy your preferences files into this folder, overwriting anything that is already there. That should get your old preferences back.

Thank you very much. I restored the contents of the folder from my backup and my preferences are all back to what they were before.

I think I'll wait a bit until the issues are sorted out. Moneydance is too critical not to be working.

    Thanks again
    Bob

    Hi Bob,
Would you mind telling us what version of Moneydance you had before the upgrade and which version you had after? Specifically the build number, which is a three digit value that can be found under Moneydance->About Moneydance. We are trying to figure out which migration paths have this error.
    Thanks.
    Sincerely,

Prior to the attempted upgrade and what I am using after the restore is 2011r2 (803).

I don't know which specific version I upgraded to because it's no longer installed. However the app file is dated 2012-09-27 and looking at the info.plist in the contents shows 2012.1 and 825.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi,
We've tracked down the bug that was causing the preferences to not migrate and will hopefully have a fix out within the next 24 hours to prevent this from happening again. In working with users who encountered this error, it seems that some were able to recover their preferences file and for others it was lost.
To bring over your old preferences file please do the follow:
Go in to finder and select Go->Go To...
Type in ~/.moneydance into the window that comes up.
If your preferences file was not lost you should see a file in those folder called config.dict. Select it and copy it.
Now in Moneydance 2012 go to help-> Show documents folder.
Navigate up one spot in the directory tree and rename the config.dict folder there to something else, and then paste in your new config.dict file.
Close Moneydance 2012 and then reopen it.
Here is a video that demonstrates these steps: http://screencast.com/t/hQpkEugSHV
We sincerely apologize to those who may have lost their preferences file and the inconvenience that resulted from that.
Please let us know if you have any more questions.
    Sincerely,
    Jon Hoover, Moneydance Support
