Lost transaction data
When I opened Moneydance this morning I found that all transactions in my investment accounts and the associated entries in my bank accounts since the entry of the initial holdings on June 30 2018 had disappeared. I have not had any computer crashes or anything else at my end that could have caused this to happen.
Is there a simple answer as to how this could have happened and how the data can be recovered?
I am not going to invest the effort in going back and reconstructing everything since July 1 last year if the risk remains that the same thing could happen again. If there isn't a simple solution to the problem I will request that you cancel my purchase of the application and refund the purchase price.

What version and build of Moneydance are you running. E.g. 2019.3(1870).
What is your computer operating system.
In your investment account RESISTER and BANK REGISTER ensure the filter ALL is highlighted.
Do you have more than on data set see under FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – OPEN.
You could restore your backup file. FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – RESTORE FROM BACKUP. Your default backup location can be found under HELP – SHOW BACKUP UP FOLDER for Moneydance 2019. The naming convention for an auto backup file is yourdatasetname.yyyy-mm-dd.moneydancearchive
This assumes you set up auto backup under FILE (MONEYDANCE on Mac) – PREFERENCES – BACKUP.
Hope this helps

Thanks Derek.
I went backwards through my backups. Transaction data was missing from all back-ups since April 23. The transaction data was there for all back-ups up to April 23. The disappearing act must have occurred on April 24. I was out of town and not working on Moneydance from April 24 to April 27.
Fortunately my data has been recovered from the April 23 back-up, but I’m still nervous it might happen again, given no obvious cause.
To answer your questions:
I’m running version 2019.1(1855)
Mac OS 10.14.4
Both registers are set to ‘ALL’
There are 16 files showing up with the FILE OPEN command. They are all versions of the same file with different numeric indicators, some of which look like the back-up files.
Cheers.
Bob

I have been using Moneydance since 2015, so have used 2015, 2017 and now 2019 and never lost data, so never had to restore from backup for this reason. Have hundreds of investment transactions going back to 2009.
All the 16 data sets under FILE - OPEN are data sets. The FILE - OPEN location does not contain backups and even if you had manually moved them to this location HELP - SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER they would not show up as they would have the wrong extension.
The only way to create data sets is FILE - NEW or FILE - RESTORE FROM BACKUP.
Perhaps you need to do some house keeping. Under HELP - SHOW DOCUMENT FOLDER with Moneydance closed move unwanted data set folder to another location. When you are happen the folder you left behind is the right one delete the others.
Hope this helps

Thanks Derek.
The screen shot shows what I am talking about. It appears that each time I opened a back-up trying to find one with the missing data, it created a new file. I have now cleaned out everything except the plain RGPF file and it seems to be working ok. Hopefully it will stay that way
Cheers

As I said, each time you RESTORE FROM BACKUP a new data set is created.
Moneydance never overwrites the original data set in case you need it.
Have Fun
