Sync with MD 2012 Only Goes one Way
I am trying out MD 2012 and using Dropbox. When I make a change on my iPhone 5 with iOS6, it shows up on the MD 2012 desktop app in about 2 minutes. But whenever I make a change on the desktop app, it never syncs with the iPhone app.
Any ideas how to get it working both ways? So far I love the app and want to switch to it but this is crucial for me to switch.

Joe,
This definitely isn't how it should be working. Could you please start out by letting me know what OS you're running as well as what version of the iPhone app you're running? Let me know and we'll go from there,

It is working now - I just had to close and restart the iPhone app.
By the way I purchased Moneydance - I have been using iBank since I left Quicken years ago, but never really liked it. Moneydance puts iBank to shame with speed, features, and syncing.

Thanks. One question - I keep getting a Java error message (see attached). I just click on OK and it's fine, but I'm wondering if there is some setting I need to know about to get rid of this. I'm on Mac OS X Mountain Lion.

No it seems to happen quite randomly, maybe about every 3 - 5 minutes or
so. I'm usually entering a new transaction when it happens.

Hello Joe,
Based on your and other user's reports, we have discovered a bug with Moneydance 2012 that leads to this particular error. We believe we have located the cause of it, and are including a fix in the next update of Moneydance. I am unable to provide a specific date for when this will happen, but we are now in the testing phases of this release, so hopefully it will be soon.

Thanks for this update. One problem: I have been syncing with DropBox, and when I try to open the file, in DropBox for Mac the Moneydance file is stored in a folder called .moneydance
But this folder never shows up when I try to use FILE OPEN OTHER.
How can I connect this DropBox file to the latest update of Moneydance on Mac?

The folder named .moneydance is a hidden folder, hence the ( . ) before the name of the folder.
You can unhide hidden folders by doing the following:
Launch the Terminal and copy and paste these commands exactly as shown. The first command activates the ability to see the hidden files:
defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
Now you must relaunch the Finder by killing it, this is how the changes take effect:
killall Finder

Ok I tried this. Now a bunch of hidden folders show up on my Desktop, but when I try to OPEN OTHER to link to my DropBox folder, none of the hidden files show up in the file window.

Hi Joe,
Sorry for our delayed response! There should be a:
.moneydancesync
folder in your Dropbox folder if you're using Dropbox to sync Moneydance to one or more iOS devices, so I'm wondering if that's what you're talking about. Moneydance 2012 data sets have a .moneydance extension, but have something before the .moneydance portion, and the Moneydance 2011 and below preferences are stored in a folder called .moneydance in your home folder (they are still there on non Mac OS X operating systems), but that folder isn't in your Dropbox folder and you shouldn't need to access it anyway.
If none of the above applies to you and you're just storing your data set(s) in a folder called .moneydance in your Dropbox folder, I'd suggest using the Dropbox iOS app or website interface to rename that folder to something that doesn't start with a '.', like just "moneydance, for example.

Thanks for the reply. I was able to remove the . from the DropBox folder,
but then when I try to open a file it's all grayed out (see attached). My
iPhone and iPad are synching perfectly with my prior version of Moneydance
but I can't seem to get the update to sync with the correct file.
There's no .md file I can find anywhere in DropBox or on my computer that
is up to date.

Hi Joe,
The screenshot you sent is of Moneydance sync data, not your data set. There's some confusion in syncing, so to clarify, there are two things that are often described as Dropbox syncing--the first is for syncing Moneydance to iOS devices, which uses the .moneydancesync folder on Dropbox and contains the folders with UUID (Universally Unique Identifiers) names, the second is for sharing a data set on Dropbox with two or more computers, which technically isn't syncing (but is often referred to as syncing).
The sync data that you're referring to in your screenshot isn't intended to be opened by Moneydance directly via the file manager, as you're trying to do--it's just used internally by Moneydance to sync the data. I would suggest renaming the .moneydancesync folder back to .moneydance sync, with the '.' in front.
Can you send us the contents of your log file? This can be found by going to Help -> Console window in Moneydance, clicking the "Copy to clipboard" button and then pasting the output to us here.
I'm wondering if you're encountering a bug in Dropbox syncing that was in an earlier version of Moneydance. If, when you go to the console log, you see a version of Moneydance that's earlier than 2012.5 (862), I would suggest downloading and upgrading to the latest version, located here:

Thanks for the clarification re the different types of syncing. I was able
to update to the newest version and get my desktop program syncing with my
iPhone and iPad. Log file below (may not need to review it now).
Only 1 more question: is it possible to have the Mac program open on more
than 1 computer (I realize not at the same time, but it would be nice to
have the possibility of updating on my desktop when at home and my laptop
when on the road).

Hi Joe,
Yes, it is possible to share a data set between two computers. To do that, I would suggest copying your data set to your Dropbox folder and then opening it from each computer, one at a time. If your data set is in Moneydance's internal Documents folder, then you can follow these instructions to move it:

Also, your log file indicates that you still have the Network Sync extension installed, which could conflict with Moneydance 2012's built-in Dropbox syncing. I would recommend remove the extension by going to Extensions -> Manage extensions, then scrolling down to the Network Sync extension and clicking the "Remove" button and then, if you haven't already, configure Dropbox syncing by going to File -> Syncing.

Awesome! I was able to do everything you mentioned, and it's all working
perfectly. To me this is now the perfect solution - puts all over
competitors to shame with the speed, customization and syncing.
