There is a 'Search' field in the upper right-hand corner of the main Moneydance window.

Searching while viewing the Summary Page will search across all accounts.

Searching from within an individual account will limit the search to that particular account.

'Advanced Search' is accessible from the Moneydance menu bar 'Edit' menu.

Lastly, the Find and Replace extension can be very useful for searching.

The problem with the 1/2 inch high category list sounds like the parameters window just needs to be resized. Try dragging the lower boarder of the window down so as to make the window longer.

Second: Liz may have already figured this out, but am passing this bit along as it took me 2 tries to get there: Once MD returns results of your Search, a Right Click one of the entries will allow you to see an option for "Show Transaction Details."
I found that useful in trying to narrow down the search results.

Double Clicking on one of the transactions will take you to that particular entry, but also closes the Search Results window, which may not be desired IF the search has returned multiple options.

Dierkdk
