When I try to shut down the program it remains on the desktop and half of desktop background covers half of Moneydance
This is the .deb file with Ubuntu-10.04

Hi ppco25lc *,
Can you send us a screenshot of what you're seeing? Also, what version of Moneydance and Java are you using? These can be found by going to Help -> About Moneydance.
Also, are you using compositing at all (running the compiz window manager or some other window manager/desktop environment that creates advanced desktop effects)? This sounds like it might be a video card driver issue.

Hi ppco25lc *,
Thanks for the screenshot--that's helpful. Based on it, you do have some form of compositing enabled (since the take screenshot window is semi-transparent) and since you're using nVidia drivers, I think it has something to do with them. I would suggest trying to upgrade the nVidia drivers to the latest version you can (which might be the one you're using--it depends on the card). It's also possible that something upgraded in the past couple of weeks that created this issue, so you may want to check and see if any updates related to your desktop environment, the X server, or your graphics card happened in the past couple of weeks. You could also try finding your desktop settings and see if you can turn off "desktop effects" or something to that effect, which might also fix the issue.
Also, compositing has gotten much more stable over the past few years, so you may want to considering upgrading to a newer version of Ubuntu (12.04 is an LTS release).

Your answer that an update from Ubuntu-10.04 is more convincing that the nvidia card and driver
As the same basic set up has worked as expected with two versions of Moneydance.
As for changing to Ubuntu-12.04.1 I have a live cd and have tried that version there is nothing about it I like.
As a trial and error I downloaded Moneydance rpm file to Mageia 2 and transferred my latest md file
Now I have a Moneydance that works just like expected. I have had the Moneydance program for a number of years and never had that problem.
Thanks for the help and info
Ray
