Blank Pop-up Windows
I've been spending a lot of time getting acquainted with Moneydance while cleaning up my transactions, categorizing them, formalizing payroll transactions, etc... I really like the software and I'm using the Linux version on Ubuntu 8.10, with Sun Java installed from the repositories. I am also using a Preview version so I can work with multiple accounts at the same bank.
The problem I keep running into, and quite often, is a pop-up window will be blank. The window frame is there, but there are no contents. Sometimes this will happen when editing a transaction. I know the window is asking me if I'm sure I want to save the changes or to edit a cleared transaction, so I hit ENTER and it's okay.
Most of the time, this happens when editing a Category or adding a Category. When it happens on those associated windows, I can't blindly key my way into doing anything. I end up having to close Moneydance and then restart it. This happens frequently. I'd say most of the time, after editing or creating 2 different Categories, this will occur. Sometimes it happens on the first time I do something with a Category.
This also happens when I go to Tools -> Edit Securities -> (I pick one to edit) -> click the Edit button next to the securities name and that window will be blank.
I'm not really sure where to start troubleshooting the problem. I've looked through the Knowledge Base and couldn't find a similar problem posted.
I'm including a screenshot of the New Category example.

Hi Hanz
I'm sorry you have been having this problem. I too had the same problem with Ubuntu 8.04.
The cause is related to a bug in java which is preventing from interacting properly with Compiz. Compiz is the ubuntu/Gnome window manager/compositor. It is responsible for providing the special effects. When I turned off the special effects in 8.04 the problem went away.
Click System->Preferences->Appearance Click on the "Visual Effects" tab Select None Click Close.
This thread suggests installing the latest Java run time environment to solve the problem. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sun-java6/+bug/118983
I have not done this yet and can not confirm that this works.
However I do intend to update to ubuntu 9.04 over the weekend which should have the fix included.
Sincerely Ben Spencer

Hi Hanz
I installed ubuntu 9.04 yesterday and have installed java 1.6.0_13
I have been using Moneydance all morning with the special effects (compiz window system) turned on and I can report that the blank pop problem is not showing its self with this configuration.
Sincerely
Ben Spencer
