Budget Reports Non Prorated Items

I have recently installed MoneyDance 2010 (723) on a Dell Laptop under Vista Home Premium. I have a problem with its Reporting behaviour.
The Budget Report listing for the Year to date of an item scheduled as annual non prorated e.g. a payment of 900 on 15th December from my Current account. If this item is actually paid early on, say, 7th December and the Budget Report run Year to Date on that date the report will show both the budget and actual amounts as zero whereas the actual amount is, say, 850. If the report is run (year to date) on 15th December or subsequently it will show the budget amount as 900 but the actual amount as zero (when it should be 850). It appears that the programme only scans for actual payments on or after the initial budget date rather than from the beginning of the year. It seems to apply the same logic to the actual and budget payments whereas it seems to me that that is not appropriate.

This logic is carried forward from MD 2008.

Jim Walsh.
Tried to post this yesterday but it seems I did not succeed.

    Jim,

I am sorry for the unreasonably long delay in responding to your issue. If you are not using the most recent version (2010r2 build 738), please update to that version. You can download the update here. This update has resolved a few key issues our users have been experiencing, including some report and budgeting bugs. Please let me know if the issue continues and I will track it as a bug.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance, and I apologize again for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

    Dear Angie,
Many thanks for your message. Currently I am on build 735 so I need to
install the update. I know my issue may be a minority one but I am anxious
to tie down major annual expenitures e.g. house insurance, so that these
items do not appear in the year to date budget expenditure till they are due
and that the actual expenditure reflects actual payments made, irrespective
of the budgeted date. This means that the scanned date range should be
different for the budgeted and actual expenditures. I think that currently
    the date ranges are identical.
Since posting I have got more experience with MoneyDance and am generally
very pleased. However I have set my once off budget items as annual prorated
items. This means that in budget reports the actual expenditures are always
correct but do not agree with budgeted figures till the end of the year. So
far I have been running MD and Money in parallel but I would like to
abandon the latter as soon as I can.

I will now update to build 738 and check whether this issue has been
addressed and be back to you as soon as I can. Meanwhile many thanks for
    getting back to me.

Reply 2 after installing build 738.
    Dear Angie,
I have now installed build 738 and tried a non-prorated item budgeted for
1st October 2010 which I paid today 2nd February. I appeared correctly on
the Detailed Income and Expenditure report. There was no show on the year to
date budget report. On the budget report for this year the budget
expenditure showed but the actual expenditure did not. This is as I expected
from previous behaviour. In other words the issue still exists.
If you want me to do anything further I will be glad to help. Otherwise I
will look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Here's an interesting wrinkle. I agree with Jim that this isn't working properly in the Budget Report. But as I was taking a look at this I found that if you use the budget bars on the home page or select the Budget Graph from the side bar (under the separate "Budgets" heading) the actual does show up there even when it was paid out earlier than the budgeted month. In my test case I budgeted in an item to begin in Mar and had the expense actually hit in Jan. When I select "quarter to date" the actual expense shows up but no budgeted value. When I select "this year" it shows up and shows the % of the total budget on the bar as now the budgeted value is shown. Selecting YTD shows the actual but no budget.

Don't know why it would work with the budget bars but not with the report.

I apologize for the long delay in our response, I am embarrassed to say that we have been snowed under with questions about Moneydance 2010. If you are not using the most recent version (2010r2 build 743), please update to that version. You can download the update here. This update has resolved a few key issues our users have been experiencing, including some issue with the budget reports. Please let me know if your issue persists and we will look into other solutions, including your OS and the version of Java you are using.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance, and I apologize again for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

    Dear Angie,

Not to worry about the delay provided my issue is still on the books. I have
build 743 and the issue is unresolved. In a word my view is that to deal
properly with nonprorated budget items the date range scanned for actual
expenditure should be the date range for which the budget report is prepared
while the date range used for the budgeted column should be the date range
in the actual budget specification i.e. in the budget manager.
I have noted all the activity in arriving at build 743 and agree with the
various improvements. The one that particularly came to my notice was in
relation to the matching of downloaded transactions. I found that in the
case of a transaction repeated weekly it latched on to the wrong date in the
earlier build 338 but I think this has been dealt with in 743. Sorry I have
not checked this out systematically. This month I relied on my manual input
of transactions. I will return to checking out matching logic when I have
    time.

Meanwhile good luck to you and your colleagues.

    Jim

    Dear Angie,
I raised the issue of the treatment of non-prorated budget items a long time ago and the issue is still extant. In my opinion it is still relevant. While in the meanwhile there have been many improvements in MD which are greatly appreciated this issue has not been resolved. One can, of course, work around the problem to produce a budget report which is valid at any date throughout the year but what I have done is troublesome and not entirely robust. I hope that now that most issues regarding MD seem to be dealt with that you will be able to revisit this one.

    Generally a very satisified user.

I wonder if the issue is that you have the start date in your budget manager for Dec 15. If this is so then Moneydance is not even looking for a payment to this budget until that date so any payments to that category prior to the start date are not included in the budget.

In setting up budget items such as this I have two possible suggestions.
    1. Assume that if the payment date is Dec.15 that you will pay early and use a Dec.1 start date on the budget manager.
    2. When you set up a yearly budget knowing you have items that are non-prorated use a Jan 1 start date to keep track of your yearly budgeted expenditures and transaction reminders for the specific payments.

    Hope this helps.
    Tom
