Hi Jonathan

I think the intended process to manually add a new price to a security price history window is to edit the Current Price then click NEW to add the Current Price to the Dated price list and then if necessary, edit the date.

You can also manually enter prices by installing and using the Security Price Entry extension under EXTENSIONS -MANAGE EXTENSIONS.

Also, to automatically update security prices there are two methods within Moneydance available to you.

The extension “Quote and Exchange Rate Updater found under EXTENSIONS – MANAGE EXTENSIONS. Check you are running the latest build v1024. For exchange rates use the source European Central Bank. Alpha Vantage covers the US as well as some securities outside the US, but is very, very slow. It’s my understanding that the source IEX Trading no longer works.

If the Quote and exchange rate updater does not work well for you try the free third-party Quote Loader. Both of the sources in the Quote Loader have good coverage of worldwide securities.

As a UK user Quote loader work best for me, Quote and Exchange Rate Updater does not support most of my securities.

The behaviour you are seeing is the expected behaviour. It is not the first time it has been questioned and I expect not the last.

You are entering data into the history table, while many people are entering the latest price you may not be doing this, the dialog box you enter the price into is not making any assumption or doing any testing so the entered price is just taken to be a "historical" price with no other significance. If using the security history to enter prices you need to enter a price into the current price field on the form for it to be used as such.

What I would suggest is to install and used the Security Price Entry extension for the manual entry of security prices. This is a much more convenient tool for the purpose and also has the ability to take the entered price(s) as the current price for each security.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479674722020-01-05T10:18:23Z2020-01-05T10:18:25ZSecurity prices

Thanks derek and dwg, I appreciate your help. OK, now I understand, I'll have a look at the extension (though maybe incorporating this functionality in the main program might be a better longer-term solution?).

Feedback to IK: the biggest barrier for new users is the poor documentation. If I am typical, a lot of learning has to be done by trial and error which is time consuming, and I am guessing that some potential customers give up along the way. The fact that the latest manual is apparently dated 2015, when you did a major code upgrade in 2019, doesn't instil confidence. Any plans to correct this?

jwtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479674722020-01-05T10:37:31Z2020-01-05T10:37:31ZSecurity prices

I'm a fellow user.

TiK decided to replace the manual with an online knowledge base, the entry point is:

https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb

It was not a decision I agree with as I felt the Knowledge Base is best used for supplemental information or for articles on frequently asked questions.

The Security History window only allows you to enter a price for one security at a time. The Security Price Entry extension however allows you to enter prices for multiple securities for the one date on the one screen.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479674722020-01-05T10:56:33Z2020-01-05T10:56:33ZSecurity prices

I would agree thought that having a checkbox to also set the price entered as the current price in the Security History section would be a good idea.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479674722020-01-05T12:09:13Z2020-01-05T12:09:13ZSecurity prices

I am not support staff, just a user.
Hi Jonathan

I think the use of extension was so that users could have a choice to only install features they intended to use, less clutter.

It has also opened up Moneydance to third party developers to provide extensions that other users would find of benefit, e.g. the third-party Quote loader. Most extension started out life as third-party extensions, some were adopted by Moneydance when their developers move on to other things, other are still actively supported by there developers. Extension also allow users to develop feature for the own use that they don’t share with others. Moneydance is enriched by extensions.

I agree with dwg ,I would prefer to see a manual along the lines of the 2015 user guide with articles for FAQ or new features awaiting inclusion in the manual

derekkent23tag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479674722020-01-05T14:44:58Z2020-01-05T14:45:00ZSecurity prices

Thanks to both. Helpful advice.

jwtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479674722020-01-05T20:02:25Z2020-01-05T20:02:25ZSecurity prices

As a little exercise in the days of Moneydance 2017 I took the 2015 user guide turned it back into a document file, added in some of the KB articles that pertained to MD 2017 and then just added bits and pieces in it as something interesting came up, it was a place to keep them. It wasn't that onerous and showed to me that maintaining and enhancing the document over time would not be an overwhelming task, one of the first things I did was a simple split into two documents a Users Guide and an introductory Tutorial.

Various explanations and procedures given in these forums with a bit of editing would slot in pretty well somewhere in a documentation set.

Release Notes are also something that is not hard to create, between the change log and the blog entries all the needed data is basically there.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/479674722020-01-10T19:22:34Z2020-01-10T19:22:35ZSecurity prices

Thanks dwg

jw
