It is my understanding that you cannot open Moneydance backup files directly from a file browser. You need to take one of the two following approaches...

The later versions of Moneydance have a 'Restore from Backup' menu item listed under the 'File' menu.

For instructions for restoring backups in older versions look the this Moneydance KB article. https://infinitekind.tenderapp.com/kb/older-versions/md-2014-restor...

As for locating your data file. Provided that you are using the default location for Moneydance data file, the easiest way to locate the data file is from within Moneydance. From the Moneydance menu bar, go to Help > Show Documents Folder. A file browser will open to the default location for MD data files.

Still getting an error message. I even removed money dance and reloaded it again on my computer. I also uploaded an older version. Still getting error messages when I go to open the files. Its infuriating as this is tax season and I have lost all my data. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. If I could download everything from online going back to 1/1/19 it would be helpful, but only downloads latest data. Is there a way to change settings so I can download everything again going back 2 years. I know my bank keeps 60 months of statements. I hate to have to manually enter Q thing. Thanks. Linda Kelly

It's probably not a good idea to switch versions of Moneydance. Work with the version that the backups were created in.

What version of Moneydance are you using?
What is the exact name of the backup file; include the file extension?
What Operating System are you using?
Have you installed any new program(s) lately?
Have you tried moving one of the backup files off of the external drive onto your local harddrive?

This is out of the hands for Moneydance which as security keeps NONE of your data on line. (one reason I like the program).

If you open MD you can find the folder with your data or backups in it by going to Help->Data Folder or Help-> Archive folder. You may have set a different backup folder in your Preferences, and can look there for a backup.

the info Kevin requests would be very helpful in trying to pin down where your data went. MD is usually careful with your data and has the auto backup system

sthtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/480350292020-01-28T04:59:14Z2020-01-28T04:59:14Zcan't restore my back up folders and lost lots of data

I believe back up was made in 2019. I did not try to move from back up to local hard drive. As far as new programs- not sure. I had to buy 3 different computers this year due to hard drive failures. Just replaced most recently in Sept or Oct. using MS most recent OS.
Back up file name: Personal Finances-20171117-1111-20190414-2218 3 2 4 2-20200124-1156
Thanks for your time with this.

Check the preferences / Backup tab to see where those files are.

If you have used the default, then you can use Help->Show archive.

Given the name of the archive file, it looks like you opened and archive and then archived it again and then opened it. (I will try to answer more fully later)

sth
