<p>The lower date is the field for a tax date, in case that's different than the actual transaction date.</p>
<p>As to why there is a date in that specific transaction, I can't really say. From what I can tell from the screenshot, that doesn't appear to be an imported transaction, so you must have entered that at some point, perhaps without realizing it.</p>
<p>If you don't think you will ever need separate tax dates, you can turn this function of by going to File -> Preferences (or Moneydance -> Preferences on a Mac) from the menu bar, and in the General tab, uncheck the Separate Tax Date for Transactions option.</p>

now but I don't know how that second date got in there.</p>
