I've attached a file called "convert_secondary_to_master.py" that should resolve this problem for you. Before using the file, you can take a backup of your Moneydance data set, using the File --> Export Backup.

To use the .py file, first save it to your computer and then follow these steps:

In Moneydance, select Window --> Show Moneybot Console

In the window that appears, select 'Open Script' then select the .py file

Click the 'Run' button to run the script file

Wait a few moments until you see a message on screen, confirming the script has run successfully.

Close and restart Moneydance.

Once completed, navigate back to File --> Syncing, and you should now be able to select the required sync method.

Please let me know if you have any problems running the script, or if you continue to encounter issues .

I chose "cancel," but I got a message saying "Finished running snippet normally at" and then today's date and time. So I think I'm good?

erictag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483902772020-06-09T00:01:28Z2020-06-09T00:01:28ZSwitching syncing from Dropbox connection to Dropbox folders

Actually apparently not. I still can't change the sync method, even after quitting and relaunching Moneydance. Maybe I need to quit all other running instances of Moneydance as well?

erictag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483902772020-06-09T22:18:43Z2020-06-09T22:18:43ZSwitching syncing from Dropbox connection to Dropbox folders

Hi Eric,

Firstly, in order to change the permissions for a specific app to access the file is as follow:
1) Open System Preferences
2) select "Security & Privacy"
3) select "Privacy" tab
4) select the "Files and Folders" entry in the list on the left
5) find Moneydance in the list that appears on the right, and tick the box to allow Moneydance to access whichever folders you like.

You need to ensure that any instance of Moneydance is closed.

Finally, you need to run the script on your "secondary" machine.

Please keep us posted on your progress, Thank you!

I'm authenticated as an admin, and the padlock in the lower left corner of the preference pane is unlocked. Note however that my normal account is not an administrative account; I authenticate with an administrator's username and password to unlock system preferences requiring administrative privileges.

Maybe I need to uninstall, download, and reinstall Moneydance?

erictag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483902772020-06-10T08:28:30Z2020-06-10T08:28:30ZSwitching syncing from Dropbox connection to Dropbox folders

If you wish to try re-installing the software, Moneydance 2019.3 (1880) is available for download at this page.

Please note, if you purchased via the Mac App store, you can simply log into your account using your Apple ID and your update should be available, for you there.
Newer versions of Moneydance are bundled with Java, so you won't need to install this separately on your computer.

And then at that point I assume Moneydance will show up in the Privacy preference pane, where I can give it access to files and folders? I note that I have Moneydance installed on four Macs, and it does not appear in the Privacy preference pane on any of them.

erictag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483902772020-06-12T15:30:53Z2020-06-12T15:30:53ZSwitching syncing from Dropbox connection to Dropbox folders

Well, at this point, sync seems to be completely nonfunctional between macOS systems. The system that I would like to be the "master" system (I still don't know if the python script you sent actually ran or not, although Moneydance indicated it ran successfully) is not syncing its changes to any of the other computers, even though it says it's writing sync data.

So now what?

erictag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/483902772020-06-12T16:12:10Z2020-06-12T16:12:10ZSwitching syncing from Dropbox connection to Dropbox folders

Moneydance purchased from the Apple App store can only use Dropbox Connection, this is a restriction placed on the software by Apple.

So as far as I know you don’t have a choice, other than purchasing the slightly different version direct from this website.

Having said that, I only run MD as Dropbox Connection & have never had any problems, syncing between MacOS, Linux & Windows.
