I had 2011. installed 2012 not from the App store but downloaded from your site.I followed the instructions on the support site to change the file location. There was no Welcome screen, the first screen was Getting started with Moneydance. I chose Import file but could not open the file from the new location. I am just returned to the previous screen. NB I moved the Documents folder - the file doesn't have an extension.

NB 2012 doesn't give the choice to save on exit as 2011 did.

Nor does Preferences, backups give a choice of backups location.

And where are the backups saved please?

In order to make use of those instructions, you need to use the Preview release of Moneydance located at:
    www.infinitekind.com/preview

The Save feature has been removed due to the fact that Moneydance now AutoSaves upon quit.

Backups are no longer actual Backups. They are now considered some type of "checkpoints".

The crew at Moneydance are now saying that we need to use a Backup program of our choosing and perform Backups of the primary data folder.

Backup files are located in the same folder as the primary data file. The primary data folder is named something like "myaccount.moneydance" with the name of the data file inside of the folder being named something like "myaccount.mdinternal" with "checkpoint" files being named something like "myaccount.mdinternal-2012-12-01".

In version 2012.2 the data file inside the folder seems always to be called root.mdinternal, however many different account folders you have. That's how it is on my machines, anyway - although I'm sure I do remember names following the [account name].mdinternal format in earlier versions of the program. What I don't know is whether this change only occurs if you use more than one account folder and load different ones from time to time.

    colin,
I believe this is new behaviour on the part of the Preview Release of Moneydance.

I just created a test account, named it "test", and, sure enough, the Data folder was named "test.moneydance", but within was a file named root.mdinternal.

But, when running Moneydance, when selecting File - Open, I navigate to the "test.moneydance" folder, select "root.mdinternal", and the file opens.

    Just ran a test:
Navigated to the "test.moneydance" folder. Right clicked on the folder, selected the Moneydance program to open the folder with, and, lo and behold, Moneydance opened showing the test data account.

Moneydance appears to be treating the "test.moneydance" folder as the actual file.

Interesting, James. I had a vague feeling that maybe the data file was starting off with a unique name (e.g. colin.mdinternal) but then getting changed at some point to root.mdinternal. You've clarified that it's root.mdinternal right from the start. Which seems a strange direction for the developers to have taken.

    Hi james f.

But, when running Moneydance, when selecting File - Open, I navigate to the "test.moneydance" folder, select "root.mdinternal", and the file opens.

Moneydance appears to be treating the "test.moneydance" folder as the actual file.

If I remember correctly, .moneydance is one of the available check-boxes offered as file associations during the Moneydance installation routine.

This could explain the file / folder behavior.

    -Kevin N.,
Never noticed during initial install of the Preview Release. My notation was based upon post installation operation.

Initial run of the Preview Release of Moneydance doesn't give an association option. See attached screenshot

    Hi James F.
I was recalling the installation routine for MD 2011.
Perhaps the .moneydance file association is automatic and behind the scenes for MD 2012.

    -Kevin N.,

You are correct, even with the install of the latest Preview Release.

Your screenshot is unique to Moneydance 2012 for Windows. The Windows Release is the only one to have an Installer program that gives file association options during the install process.

Ubuntu Linux install process does not have this option.

OS X does not have an install process of any kind. The program downloads as a .zip file. When unzipped, it creates the program in the same location that the .zip file is in. Double Left clicking on the program launches the program, no type of Installer.

The same holds true for the Generic Unix release and the OS/2 release. They're just .zip files of the program.

    Hi James F.
Ah, i see. Thanks for the explanations.
It's always interesting to learn how other OS's perform certain tasks.
