Today the download worked, so it must have been a problem with the bank.

I found a difference in two files downloaded from Synchrony
I found this in the file that does not work.
This is from the file that does import without error, but the date is not current.

Ok, now you can see the discussion that was closed above. My comment is that I was getting this error when I tried to open the transaction file as created synchrony bank (Sam's Mastercard):

There was an error importing the file 'Transaction 5.qfx': java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: "R"

I discovered the same code in the file that did not work:

So, I edited the file to put in the proper date sequence

Opened the file and all the transactions were downloaded successfully.

My point to Infinite Kind is that I don't think the dates in those commands even matter since each transaction has its own date on each one. My guess is that IK should consider IGNORING the
commands and just load the file anyway if it finds VALID data.

That is my input/comment and I am sticking to it! Thanks -- Rob Harris

    Hi Rob

Have you considered that the OFX file provided by your bank is not conforming to the OFX specification and as such Moneydance is correct in flagging an import error?

Taking a look at the OFX specification it is apparent that if present both <DTSTART> and <DTEND> should be used to define the date range of the included transactions.

For example, my bank OFX file includes

And this conforms to the example in the OFX Specification page 238 relating to a statement download.

In your position, I would be asking my bank are they conforming to the OFX specification and if so, why have they not used a valid date range and what does the “R” mean in this context.

    Food for thought.

I am getting the same error - There was an error importing the file 'Transaction 5.qfx': java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: "R"

I can do as stated, that is change the R & R to reflect the correct date. It seems that this fix will have to be applied manually each time that data is downloaded. Am i correct in my assumption?
I agree with Rob's assessment: "My guess is that IK should consider IGNORING the
    R R
commands and just load the file anyway if it finds VALID data."

I just answered my own question. I should be able to d/l using the QIF format.

You both have good points. I first contacted Synchrony and they gave me the same answer all banks give. Contact Quicken support. If you say "Moneydance" they consider you a "quack" (since they do not recognize it) and brush you off. Anyway, as Larry says, I don't understand what ignoring the "R" would do or even why the date range is required for individual transactions with dates.

I also just recently started having the same problem with Sam's Mastercard downloads. Can someone in layman terms explain to me how you overcame this problem. I see mention of start and stop dates but my Sam's MC website does not have a feature to pick a range of dates. Only completed activities. Thanks in advance for your help.

This is a reply to (Posted by Oscar Tamyo on Sep 24, 2020 @ 01:32 PM)

To work around this, download transactions from the Sams MC website and there will be a file called "Transaction.qfx" (if you have more than one it will have a number in the name). Locate the latest file (the one you just downloaded), right click on it and open it with notepad or wordpad. Look down in the file and you will see the following lines about 30-40 lines in:

I don't know or care what the "R" means, I just know Moneydance will not accept it until you make a small edit. Make the lines look like the following lines using the first date of the period (usually the date after the last statement date; if your last statement date was September 23rd then you put "20200924" as the starting date since it is the next day). I use yesterday as the ending date since you can't download today's transactions normally. So assuming yesterday was October 21st you would use "20201021" as the ending date. When you do it, it should now look like this:

Close the application (Wordpad or notepad) by clicking the "X" and be sure to SAVE it.

Now just double-click the transaction file you just saved and it will be accepted by Moneydance. Good luck.
