Exactly what folder did you copy and from where to where.

It may help to know what version of Moneydance you are using and the Operating system.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/486615972020-09-24T23:35:38Z2020-09-24T23:35:38Ztransfer to new computer

Hi dwg,

Thanks for response.

Both are Win 10 Pro. Original MD file is 2019.1 (1855) new install is 2020.1(1928). I copied the entire original MD folder (menu Show MD folder) which is located in User file. ( I don’t use windows documents, pictures, etc. I put all my stuff (data) in One folder including mail. Programs in Programs but data in one folder.) As I said, I do not find any file that is myfilename.moneydance other than the backups which also have date appended.

Donald

dcmtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/486615972020-09-25T09:45:50Z2020-09-25T09:45:50Ztransfer to new computer

In the user account there should have been a top level folder called .moneydance.

If you copy this folder and all sub-folders to the new system, and assuming you have not moved the data set to a custom location then you should not have any problem starting Moneydance, once the software been installed, and it should open the last used data set.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/486615972020-09-25T16:14:44Z2020-09-25T16:14:44Ztransfer to new computer

That’s what I did but the only option is back up files and they don’t seem to retain preferences and quote loader set up. I expected to find “myfilename.moneydance” somewhere but I have searched and searched and nada!

I’m almost wishing I had stayed with Q. MD somehow keeps picking up older transactions and altering beginning balances so I constantly have to adjust.

dcmtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/486615972020-09-25T21:37:14Z2020-09-25T21:37:14Ztransfer to new computer

If transactions are being changed and thus balances there has to be something occurring that is causing that. Moneydance does not do that on its own.

As you mention the Q word I assume you are using Windows.

The structure should be to have a .moneydance folder and underneath this a Documents Folder within this folder is the default location for your data sets. You can move the data sets themselves to a different location if you wish, but they should still be on a local disk and not be in any syncing services like a dropbox folder.

With a default setup all data, extensions, preferences etc are stored in the .moneydance folder using a defined structure, you might like to post an image of this structure to see if it all looks correct.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/486615972020-10-15T18:51:01Z2020-10-15T18:51:01Ztransfer to new computer

Hello again dwg,

I haven’t let this go but have continued with it as time allows.

This is just FYI as I’m not requesting more support at this time.

I looked at the versions I was using and the new one, where preferences did not appear in the data, was 2020 and my old version was 2019. Tried to go to the MD site to get a 2019 version but there’s nothing available between 2017 and 2020. That’s pretty fucked up. So I plunked down another $50, upgraded old data and transferred it to new computer without a hitch.

When I originally imported data, with the exception of some asset accounts and the portfolio, I used a cutoff date of the end 2018. Whatever the balance was on 12/31/18, that was my beginning balance. As I continue onward, banking and charge accounts are picking up transactions that are already in another account so I have to go back over and delete the duplicates.

An example would be there’s a deposit to checking from portfolio for 2000 on 11/3/16. Somehow in the initial download only one side of each transaction registered. Then, all of a sudden, the other part of the transaction appears and I end up with a duplicate. This is happening with cash accounts (6), the portfolio account as a separate cash account and numerous property type assets.

So, I am constantly picking through thousands of transaction to eliminate duplicates.

As a price to pay to get away from Quicken, it’s hefty, but I can afford it. There are things I find difficult and cumbersome with MD (splits are easier in Q as are all portfolio transaction.

But got through one major obstacle and glad of it.

Thank you for your assistance.

Can’t imagine why the last prior version listed is 2017. I can only go through so much to get this functioning and fifty bucks is still saving me money from—and I don’t give it to them— Quicken.

dcmtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/486615972020-10-15T21:50:10Z2020-10-15T21:50:10Ztransfer to new computer

Moneydance 2020 is available from the main download page in any case:

https://infinitekind.com/download-moneydance-personal-finance-software

It is not considered to be a previous version at this stage since 2021 has just gone into beta.

What versions are considered to be previous versions are determined by the licensing requirements. Moneydance 2020 was considered, from a licensing perspective, to be an extension of Moneydance 1919, as a License for Moneydance 2017 entitled you to use either version. Hence why you do not see Moneydance 2019 on the previous version page, however all stable builds are available from the direct download site.

If you are running 2019 there is no real reason not to use 2020.

dwg
