Income/expense bar graph on home page
My home page has a bar graph to indicate expenses or income over
a variety of time periods. However, it will not include my wife's
salary in the income. In the breakdown of splits for her paycheck,
her gross is listed as "Salary Spouse", a held-over designation
from Quicken, I assume. Is this the problem? It seems that it
cannot be changed to a simple "Salary". Are there some preference
parameters to adjust that I am missing?
Thanks,
Leonard Williams

Additional discovery on this issue: When I try to edit categories, "Salary Spouse" is under expense categories, and there seems to be no way to change it to "income".

Hi arckon,
You are correct, you can not change the 'type' of a Category.
You'll need to create a new Category of the proper 'Type' and then use 'Batch Change' to move the txns from the old Category's Account to the new Category's Account.
Always make sure that you have a recent backup or copy of your data file before using 'Batch Change'.
Batch Change is a powerful tool. If a mistake is made using Batch Change with multiple txns selected, things can get ugly in a hurry.
1) Create the new proper Category. Tools > Categories > New
2) Once the new Category is created, again go to Tools > Categories, Locate the old Category that you want to move the txns out of and right-click it (CTRL-click for Mac). Choose 'Open in New Window'.
3) This will open the Account register for that Category. Select (highlight) any txn then use key-combo CTRL-A. All of the txns in the register should now be selected (highlighted).
4) Right click (CTRL-click for Mac) any of the highlighted txns, choose 'Batch Change', then 'Account'. (That is not a typo, you are changing the Account of the Category). From the resulting 'Account' drop-down list select the name of the new Category that you created in Step 1.
This process will remove all txns from the account register of the old Category and move them to the account register of the new Category.
You can now close the New Window.
You can then delete the old Category.
Again it's best to make sure that you have a backup or copy of your data file before attempting this process.
Let's see if this resolves the bar graph issue.

Kevin--
Your instructions were very clear, but I ended up a few hundred thou in the hole! Could it have to do with the category coming in as one of several splits in a paycheck? Also--I noticed that other paycheck categories are reversed under the spousal version of those categories; e.g. taxes are listed as income categories. This has not heretofore been a problem, because everything's been entered in the correct column as payment or deposit; I only noticed the anomaly when checking last month's income and finding only my own listed. I don't use the program with turbo-tax or any of that stuff--just thought it would be nice to have it working properly.

Sounds to me that you selected the wrong Category listings when entering the splits.
See attached screenshots. Notice that there are Expense and Income Categories for Taxes.
Income Category for Taxes is when you receive your Federal and State Income Tax Refunds.
Expense Category for Taxes is for the taxes withheld from a paycheck.

Hi Leonard,
You did make a copy of your original data file. Correct?
I can't say for certain whether the 'split' aspect could have had such adverse effects on the batch change. Although, each split line item does call for it's own Category designation so it really shouldn't.
As long as you're playing around with a copy of your data file (correct?) you can try using batch change to correct the other offending Categories. Paying careful attention to their Income vs. Expense qualities as forum co-member james f has proposed.
Luckily, you can always return to your original data file and leave matters as they were. Correct? :)

Yes--I copied and renamed my most current file to use for testing. I do believe that the mix-up between expenses and incomes on paychecks goes back to my conversion from Quicken to Moneydance; perhaps I had it wrong then, but everything worked. In my initial attempt at repairs, I don't know why my wife's paychecks disappeared (is there something she's not telling me?).
Thanks, guys,
Leonard

Hi Leonard,
I'd be curious to hear if you get things sorted.
Best of luck.

Kevin--
I started over with a new re-named copy of my file and I am having success! I don't know what I did wrong the first couple of tries, but it's going pretty well now. Tedious! I've got 12 splits in a paycheck to change, with some new categories needed. Thanks again for your help! Leonard

Hi Leonard,
Glad to hear that things are coming together.
Take a look a the 'Find & Replace' extension.
It may prove helpful in your situation.

Kevin--
Done! (I think) Seeing the figures associated with each category helped
me to spot some other discrepancies which didn't appear in account
balances, but were labelled incorrectly, making for a flawed database.
Not that it's perfect now--but certainly more serviceable. And I know my
way around the program a little better.
One more question: What function the "Tax related" check box serve? Is
that for TurboTax and the like?
Thanks again, and best regards,
Leonard

Hi Leonard,
Nice work! It's good to hear that you've become so adept with the inner workings of MD.
Re: 'Tax Related', if I remember correctly, there was some rudimentary Turbo Tax extension that someone had worked on but it was buggy and unpolished. I don't even think it's available anymore.
The 'Tax Related' property of a Category can be used when generating either of the two Income & Expense reports. Realize though that this is more of just a user defined option than any comprehensive tax reporting measure.
Moneydance being a multi-national software could not possibly encompass all of the unique nuances of the different national tax codes.
Congratulations on getting your data file back in shape.
