2012.2 will not import .md file

Hello,

I have upgraded from MD 2011.2 to MD 2012.2 on OS X 10.6.8. After upgrading MoneyDance, I am unable to import my 2011 file. When I attempt to import it, it looks like it's not wanting to import files with an extension of .md. The .md file is grayed out in the file selection dialog box and cannot be selected - however, a QIF file I have from years ago is selectable. See screenshot...

I have tried renaming the file and moving the file to another location as suggested in previous threads - neither has worked.

Can you please help me figure out how to get my 2011 .md file into 2012?

Thanks!
John

    Hi John,

For the Moneydance 2012.2 release, you want to use the Open Other function to open the .md file. You can use the "Open Other" button on the Welcome screen or go to File -> Open -> Open Other and open the file that way. You'll then be asked if you want to convert the file and import it, which will bring the converted file into Moneydance's internal storage location, or just convert it, which will leave it where it is. After choosing which you want, your data will be in Moneydance again.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance!

Thanks, Scott. When I use the File --> Open --> Open Other function, my .md file is also greyed out. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks,
    John

Where is MD's internal storage? Is there a way to access it?

I downloaded 2012 on my computer in US, imported all my data files. Back home, downloaded 2012 on my computer, but my data files are gone from Dropbox. Are they totally gone?

Strange thing, though, my license number changed between 2011 and 2012, is that supposed to happen?

MD doesn't show an option to "open other."

    Hi John,

Do you already have a data set in Moneydance called "Finances"? If you do, it should be listed under File -> Open. If you do, I'd suggest renaming your Finances.md file to something different and see if you're able to open it then.

    Hi bwells,

Are you using the latest Moneydance 2012.2 release? If you go to Help -> Console window in Moneydance it should say "Starting Moneydance 2012.2 (849)" on the first line. If you're not, you can upgrade by downloading it from here:

    http://infinitekind.com/downloads

As well, this Knowledgebase article will tell you where your data files are located:

    http://help.infinitekind.com/kb/frequently-asked-questions-2/moneyd...

I'm not sure about the license key. Since that's a private issue, if you'd like you can open a new thread in the private area and send us your keys and we can look into what's going on.

I am having the same problem as John.

I installed Moneydance 2012.2 on OS X 10.8.2. When I first launched Moneydance 2012.2, I saw the "Welcome to Moneydance" screen, which shows that I am running version 2012.2 (849). As per the instructions in the User's Guide, I clicked on "Open Other..." I then navigated to the folder containing my Moneydance 2011 file (moneydance.md) - and like John, I see the file there, but grayed out and not selectable.

I have tried renaming my Moneydance 2011 file to any number of other filenames (finance.md, money.md, etc.) and even tried other file extensions (moneydance, moneydance.old, moneydance.2011) with no luck. I've also tried moving the 2011 file to various folders, also with no luck. Moneydance 2012.2 shows it as grayed out and not selectable regardless.

We're looking into this, but in the meantime you can open any .md files by dragging it into the main Moneydance window, or onto the app icon.

    Thanks,
    Sean

Unfortunately neither of those suggestions works.

Dragging the 2011 moneydance.md file into the Welcome to Moneydance window does nothing - the moneydance.md icon just snaps back to its original location.

Dragging the 2011 moneydance.md file onto the Moneydance 2012.2 app icon just launches the same Welcome to Moneydance screen (with no Account Sets listed).

    Hi Ethan,

When dragging the file onto the Moneydance 2012.2 app icon, is Moneydance already running?

    Thanks,
    Sean

Originally I had tried dragging the file onto the app icon when Moneydance was not running. I just tried it again with Moneydance 2012 already running, and was able to import the file. Thank you for your help.
