Transferring programme to another computer
I know that unfortunately I cannot run Money dance on two Apple
computers at the same time. I therefore use my desk top mainly.
However I am now going abroad and need the programme on my Apple
note book . Can anyone please advise me what to do?
How do I transfer all the up to date details from my desk top to my
note book and then vice versa when I return home?
If I only had a brain I'm sure I could do it.

Hi mike1512,
Per the Moneydance license agreement, that statement does not appear to be accurate.
Look to the 'How Many Keys' section of the following website:
http://infinitekind.com/purchase
As for loading Moneydance onto your laptop, check to see which version of Moneydance you are currently using.
Open Moneydance, then from the Menu bar, click on Moneydance > About Moneydance or Menu bar > Help > Console Window. Either of these will provide the current version of Moneydance that you are using.
Once you've determined your current version of Moneydance:
You can download the 2012.2 Build 849 here:
http://infinitekind.com/downloads
You can download the 2011r2 Build 803 here:
http://moneydance.com/other
You can download the 2011r2+ Build 808 here:
http://moneydance.com/preview/
You can download the 2010 Build 757 here:
http://moneydance.com/download_2010
You can download the 2008 Build 643 here:
http://moneydance.com/download_2008
Download & install the appropriate version onto your laptop. You can use the same License Key as in your desktop version of Moneydance.
To load your data file onto your laptop, first open Moneydance on your desktop.
Look to the Title Bar along the very top of the Moneydance window.
Take note of the path to the currently open file.
Close Moneydance and navigate to that path's destination to locate your data file. Your data file will have a .md extension. e. g. filename.md.
Copy your .md data file to your laptop by burning it to a CD / DVD, copying it to a flash drive or by emailing it to yourself and then downloading it to your laptop.
Once the data file is copied over to the laptop and the program is installed you should be ready to get traveling.
HTH -Kevin N.
Edit:
It just dawned on me that you may have purchased your version of Moneydance through the Apple Store in which case the Moneydance license agreement referenced above may not apply.
The instructions for copying your data file may also need to be re-evaluated.
If this is the case, I apologize for the misinformation.

Hi Mike,
Do let us know if you got it from the App store and we can advise from there, otherwise Kevin's advice is good.
Sincerely,
Jon Hoover, Moneydance Support

Hi Kevin
Thanks for your prompt reply. I think I am not explaining my self clearly. I'm almost sure that when I first bought Moneydance from the moneydance site (there is mention of bmtmicro.com on the invoice)I could run the programme on my iMac, iPad, iPhone and Mac book air . And if I'm not mistaken by putting them in Dropbox they all synched.
At some point the iMac and MacBook stopped synching and I contacted you and that was when I was advised that due to the new release of your programme the previous facility was not now available. I understood you to say you were working on a beta version to resolve this problem.
I may have got all this completely wrong but that's my perception of things at present. So when I said the programme will not run on two computers that is what I meant.
To try to explain to you more clearly this is the position:
I run Moneydance on my iMac and via Dropbox it syncs with iPad and iPhone.
I am now going abroad and want the programme and all information on my MacBook and then when I return to the UK I want to transfer the info from my MacBook to my iMac.
Hope I have explained myself better.
Regards
Mike
Sent from my iPad :-)

Hi Mike,
That does clear things up a bit.
However, since I am not versed in the workings of the Mac OS I will yield to Jon Hoover's capable hands to help you further.
So as to help Jon in assisting you, you should provide the following:
Moneydance version
Operating System
Version of Java
You can glean this information from the first few lines of text in the Console Window listed under Moneydance's Help menu. Copy and paste the information into your next post.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

mike1512,
With the latest release of Moneydance, you can once again share your data between your iMac and MacBook via Dropbox.
Download and install Moneydance from:
www.infinitekind.com/downloads
On your iMac, move your Data file bundle to Dropbox. You can find the location of your Data file bundle by going to Help - Show Document Folder. You'll want to move the entire Documents folder to Dropbox. I would suggest creating a folder in your Dropbox folder aptly named Moneydance.
When opening Moneydance after the above procedure, choose "Open Other" and locate your Data folder in Dropbox. The data folder will be named "somename".moneydance. Do this same thing on you MacBook.

Hi Mike,
The latest version of Moneydance 2012 should allow you to share your file through dropbox. Can you confirm you have that version? (Look under Moneydance -> About Moneydance or Help -> About Moneydance)
If not you can download it here: http://infinitekind.com/downloads
To move your file to dropbox please follow these steps:
Moneydance is putting new (non-imported) files into a specific location by default. If you want to move your files to a different location after creating them please do the following:
1. Go to Help->Show Documents Folder.
2. Close Moneydance.
3. Drag or 'Cut' yourfilename.moneydance file bundle to the location of your choosing. Don't copy it, you don't want to leave a duplicate copy behind.
4. Open Moneydance and on the Welcome Screen use 'Open Other' to point Moneydance towards your files new location.
Please let us know if you have any more questions.
Sincerely,
Jon Hoover, Moneydance Support
