To try and isolate what is causing the problem I believe the frist step i to look to the config.dict file to see if that is an issue, we can do that by renaming this file and seeing if the problem persists,

If you're using Mac OS, it should be located at one of these locations within your Home folder:

~/Library/Containers/com.infinitekind.MoneydanceOSX/Data/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/config.dict

or:

~/Library/Application Support/Moneydance/config.dict

If you have any trouble finding your Home Library folder you can open Finder and hold down the option key while selecting the Go menu and the Library folder option should occur or you can open Finder and select Go -> Go to Folder and copy and paste in the following:

~/Library

This should pull up your local Library folder.

If you're using Windows, it should be located under your login directory at:

C:\Users(yourusername).moneydance\config.dict

or

C:\Documents and Settings(yourusername).moneydance\config.dict

Depending on your version of Windows

If you're using Linux it should be located in your home folder at:
~/.moneydance/config.dict

Once you've found your config.dict file, make sure Moneydance is closed and rename the file (to something like config-org.dict, for example), then open Moneydance again and it will appear as though you've just installed Moneydance for the first time and may have to locate and open your data set again.

Now try the operation you were having trouble with and see if it works as expected.

If it does you can continue using the new configuration file by while viewing your data file, choose Help --> Register Moneydance and input your license key.

If the problem is the file, it is very hard to detect in many instances what the problem is so it is easier and quicker to just continue with a new file, you need to reset your preferences however

If you run into any problems, or if it is not the cause of the issue you can simply close Moneydance and rename config-org.dict file back to config.dict and open Moneydance again to restore your original settings.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/488596982020-11-26T20:04:56Z2020-11-26T20:04:57ZUpdate wont save licence key

Thank you for your quick response. What is the name of my data set and
where do I find it?

want to select "import new account set" in order to reload my data, but
what file do I select from the .moneydance folder?

Therese Shaperotag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/488596982020-11-26T20:18:37Z2020-11-26T20:18:37ZUpdate wont save licence key

I'm a fellow user.

Only you know what you named your data set. All anyone else knows is that it is a folder (bundle on Mac) with a name that ends with the extension of .moneydance.

I do not see the link between this and the problem you have asked about. Config.dict is not located in your data set.

When you rename config.dict it is as though you have just installed Moneydance, from the software's perspective, so you get the welcome screen as it did not know the name of the data set you had open. If your data set is in the default location it should be listed in the bar at the right hand side of the screen, you just double click it and it should open. If it is not there it means it is not in the default location and you need to use the Open Other button to navigate to where you did place the data set and select it.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/488596982020-11-26T20:41:58Z2020-11-26T20:41:58ZUpdate wont save licence key

thank you so much for helping on Thanksgiving! I've done a dumb thing and
deleted an account that I need to bring back. Is there any way to close
Moneydance without it backing up so I can restart it with my previous
unaltered file?

Therese Shaperotag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/488596982020-11-26T20:49:13Z2020-11-26T20:49:13ZUpdate wont save licence key

Moneydance performs saves as you go along, around every 20 seconds by default, so it is not possible to close Moneydance and not save any changes you may have done.

The only real recourse you have in such a situation is to restore the data from an earlier backup.

Where I am we do not celebrate Thanksgiving and at this time of the year it is much too hot for a roast dinner :) It is also already Friday here.

dwgtag:infinitekind.tenderapp.com,2009-01-14:Comment/488596982020-11-26T21:07:06Z2020-11-26T21:07:07ZUpdate wont save licence key

Ok, thank you I was able to restore and my original problem with the key
