Can Not Chose MD 2011 md File in MD 2012
I am upgrading from MD 2011r2 (803) to MD 2012.3 (852). When I start MD 2012, I select Open Other on the Welcome screen, and navigate to the Moneydance md file location. But I can not select the file the md file because they are all grayed out. Can anyone help?
HAPPY BOXING DAY!

Hi Mark,
If I remember correctly, some people have had success by opening a standard MD 2012 data file and then using File > Import so as to import their MD 2011 data.
Make a copy of your MD 2011 data file before attempting this. Just in case.

File>Import does not work. The md file is still grayed out. For some reason, the 2012 version doesn't think that an md file is a valid file type.
On a related note, Moneydance Updater indicates that my 2011 version is up to date. Shouldn't it detect the 2012 version? When I manually invoke the Moneydance Updater, nothing happens.

Hi Mark,
The file format has been changed for MD 2012. You can read up a little on it here.
http://infinitekind.com/blog/archives/601/
You may want to read through that blog entry so that you are prepared for some of the changes in MD 2012.
As for the MD updater extension, they may not have yet pushed MD 2012 to the updater yet.
I will yield to MD support to help you further with importing your MD 2011 data file as I have not been able to reproduce the behavior that you are experiencing.
Sorry that I couldn't be of more help.

Thanks for trying, Kevin. Standing by. I've read the the blog and was anticipating the changes, but never got that far.
I'm not sure why the 2012 version wouldn't be pushed to the updater yet - it's almost 2013.

Hello,
In the welcome screen, you should not be selecting Open Other. This function is for opening an existing Moneydance 2012 data file in a non-default location. To import a Moneydance 2011 file, you should use the import function.
One common cause of the 2011 or earlier data files appearing greyed out is that the extension the file ends with is not .md. Can you ensure that the file you are trying to use the import function with ends in .md?

Yes, the file extension ends in md and is in a non standard location.
iPhone-o-gram. Please excuse brevity and typos.

Hi,
Sorry that this hasn't been resolved yet. Would you mind taking a screenshot of what you are seeing when you go to file->import and your .md file is greyed out. To take a screenshot, press at the same time in this order: Command (Apple Key) + Shift + 3.
This will place the screenshot on your desktop.
Now either in an email or on the web forum you can attach that image and send it to us.
Thanks.
Sincerely,

I see the same problems. And if import is supposed to be the way to do this, then the program's own description of import is horrid. It says that it is for importing, and I quote "Quickendata, OFX, QFX, OFC, QIF". No mention of md. It also seems incredibly obscure to first open some other account set that you don't want to work with. Not to speak of that not being an option unless you already have an account set.
Isn't this the very first thing that any current user would want to do when starting up moneydance 2012? Wouldn't one think that it ought to be obvious how to do it without checking the support forums? It sure isn't obvious at all. I did manage to get my old stuff into 2012 by the "drag old file" method mentioned elsewhere, but that's the only way. Yes, the old file was set to open with md 2011 (and did so fine).
All this was on my laptop, so as to avoid trashing the install on my iMac that is what I really use. I'm not letting md 2012 so much as touch the iMac until after I've adequately tested it out on the laptop. Been burned once that way before with md2012 trashing my md2011 preferences including the check printing that I had spent so much time getting right. Took a while to restore that using Time Machine.
It's not looking particularly close to ready yet.
As an aside, every time I start up moneydance and cancel it opening the default existing set, it gives an error message about a bad checkpoint. This for any existing set. I think the cancel is getting misinterpreted as some other kind of error.
By the way, running OS X 10.6 and using the MoneyDance 2012.3 described on your download page as being for 10.6 and earlier.

I ended up exporting the account from MD 2011 and importing it to MD 2012. Three transactions were duplicated in a closed checking account. I deleted the transactions and all seems well. The migration feature between versions definitely needs work. Otherwise, the new release seems quite smooth.

HI Vicky33158,
Ethan was actually mistaken regarding what the correct use for Open Other is, it is the appropriate selection for importing a file; our apologies.
Someone else reported a similar problem to what you are having and what fixed it was changing the file association. In their case the MD file had a system association with a completely different program.
What they needed to do was ctrl-click on a MD file and select 'get info' and in the window that comes up look in the the 'Open With' section and see if there was the correct association.
It sounds like you got it over anyway. I'm sorry that we did not give you correct technical support at first, and I am in agreement that we need to have a clearer description of importing when the program is first used.
Please let us know if you have any more questions.
Sincerely,
Jon Hoover, Moneydance Support

John,
I tried your recommendation and it worked. I recommend updating the user's manual as it is incorrect and can waste a user's time. Thank you for following through.
Mark

Hi Mark,
I'm glad that cleared it up. I will speak to the developers about getting fixed as we have historically not had this problem so I don't think it has to be the case.

I had this same issue..The file association was correct, but I could not open it from within MD2012.3. What I ended up doing was going to the file location right clicking and opening with Moneydance.. I was then able to see the "convert" and "convert and import" dialog box

Can't thank you guys enough for the most completely fucked up and irritating upgrade experience I've ever encountered! I've wasted 60 minutes of my life dealing with this pig of an upgrade and I'm giving up. Nothing in your process is intuitively obvious. Nothing. Did I mention that nothing in the upgrade process is intuitive or even helpful? Locating the source data file and changing the Open With settings from within the GetInfo window in order to begin a file import? Seriously? Or how about the factually incorrect and worthless instructions in your How to Move Your Data File to a Different Location FAQ? It doesn't fucking work because the referenced files and folders are labelled differently. Thank God I was able to restore 2011 along with my original settings and trash the current abortion. Holy fuck.

Sir - Your response is vile and unwarranted. While the upgrade process as listed in the user's manual is incorrect and the resolution was not easily achieved, that is no reason to spread offensive language through the ether. The MD people have been prompt and courteous with their replies. An attempt at maturity and patience on your part would go a long way.

I had every intention of submitting a vile response and I consider it completely warranted given the circumstance. I'm tired of being expected to embrace the notion that companies that sell products with misleading and ineffective support strategies should be immune from criticism. This upgrade should have been labelled with a warning for users to save the most stable version of the program for reinstallation after they abandon the upgrade process. To be fair, the process wouldn't have been all that daunting if the manual and FAQ section were at least inaccurate. The software engineers either need to pull the upgrade, fix the code or revise the support material. Foisting this experience on a paying customer is inexcusable and I'm firm in the opinion that I was not the only one that wasted time struggling with one work around after another. As for the prompt and courteous responses by the MD people go ahead and give them 10 points out of 10 for professional courtesy if it makes you feel better while you carry their water. I just expected an application that was going to work and I ended up losing an hour of my life instead.
